(NLDO) - Ho Chi Minh City will deploy electronic tickets connecting Metro Line 1 and buses, helping passengers pay without cash, making travel more convenient.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just directed the Department of Transport to coordinate with relevant units to deploy a cashless payment system on buses, synchronized with Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien).
People use Mastercard, swipe card to take metro line 1
According to the plan, the city will install 2,000 card readers on buses, of which 1,700 will be equipped on operating vehicles and 300 will be spare devices.
These devices are capable of reading contactless bank cards (EMV standard), scanning QR codes and integrating electronic invoices. The automatic payment system will share the server infrastructure and software with Metro Line 1, helping to synchronize data and create convenience for passengers when using interconnected electronic tickets.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also requested the Department of Transport to coordinate with the Department of Finance to complete the inter-connection fare plan and report the results in March 2025.
The city has approved the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Department of Transport and Mastercard Asia/Pacific Pte.Ltd to develop modern payment solutions in public transport.
Accordingly, Mastercard will finance the entire cost of setting up the system for 5 years, including equipment and software, but not including operating costs such as transaction fees, electronic invoices, 4G SIM cards and consumables.
Relevant units are developing a warranty and maintenance process for the equipment and electronic ticket collection system. Once completed, the system will be handed over to the Department of Transport, the Public Transport Management Center and related units for operation. Before officially operating in March 2025, the reader devices are being tested on subsidized bus routes.
The implementation of electronic tickets connecting Metro Line 1 and buses is expected to help improve people's experience when using public transport, promote cashless payment habits and move towards more modern and convenient urban transport.
