Thuy Viet Commune (Thai Thuy, Thai Binh) has 75 hectares of agricultural land along the Hoa River for exploiting earthworms. This natural product often appears with the tide, and is harvested in the 9th and 10th lunar months every year, bringing high economic benefits to the people.
Earthworms - "heavenly gifts" that the whole commune benefits from
“On the twentieth of September and the fifth of October”, people in Thuy Viet (Thai Thuy, Thai Binh) are excited to go to the fields to collect rươi. People consider rươi as “heaven’s blessing”, which has brought them a more prosperous life compared to working in the fields from dawn to dusk to grow rice. Unlike other localities where the area of rươi is concentrated in a few households, in Thuy Viet commune, the rice field area with rươi is divided equally among households in the whole commune.
After many appointments, we went with Mr. Nguyen Duc Chuong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thuy Viet Commune to witness a harvest of earthworms by the local people. Going down to the fields in the afternoon, from morning to late afternoon, many people put aside their daily work and went to the beach to harvest earthworms.
Ms. Pham Thi Dung, An Phuc Dong village shared: My family only grows one rice crop a year, applying organic production processes, completely not using chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This year, the main crop of rươi has the best quality, lots of powder, even and fat. The rươi harvest also depends on many factors such as tides and weather. We rely on experience to determine the time to harvest rươi. My family has 1.2 sao of rươi, on the first day I harvested 30kg, sold to traders right in the field for 250,000 VND/kg.
These days, everyone in Thuy Viet is happy because this year the weather is favorable and there are a lot of worms.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuc, An Phuc Tay village said: “Rươi has been around in Thuy Viet for a long time. When I was a child, I followed my mother to catch rươi. Back then, due to shortages, my mother would save every rươi she caught in a jar of salt to eat all year round. When dipping it in boiled sweet potato leaves, when pouring it into steamed sweet potato rice, everyone in the family was happy. In previous years, 8 sao of rươi fields brought my family a good source of income. This year, the 10th lunar month is the time when we have the most rươi. In the past few days, I have collected about 1 quintal, worth more than 25 million VND.”
Ms. Nguyen Thi Duyen, An Phuc Dong village said: The earthworms live underground in the natural environment so it is impossible to raise or take care of them. The earthworms are bringing very high economic value, without having to invest too much money, without having to buy seeds or food, and without having to take care of them, but harvesting is simple and the price is high. The best way to make earthworms is to make earthworm patties, just add eggs, pork belly, betel leaves, ginger leaves, tangerine peel and a little coconut pulp to have a delicious earthworm patty.
Planning for sustainable development of earthworm area
Thuy Viet commune has 500 households with nearly 5,000 people. The exploitation of earthworms in Thuy Viet not only creates great economic benefits but also protects and improves the ecological environment along the river.
Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chuong said: Previously, the local farming of earthworms only stopped at the natural area where earthworms live. In recent years, the commune has planned a rice-earthworm growing area of 75 hectares. To plan a synchronous earthworm farming area, the province has supported 11 billion VND to build 6 internal traffic routes, water channels for earthworm exploitation and training in production techniques. Each year, the income from earthworms of Thuy Viet people reaches over 20 billion VND.
This result is due to the fact that for many years, people have not used chemical pesticides to spray rice but have chosen to use organic fertilizers. Developing the area of rươi combined with organic rice cultivation is suitable, bringing high economic efficiency, gradually forming a commodity production area providing high-quality rươi products, ensuring food hygiene and safety and organic rice products.
Mr. Pham Van Nghiep, Director of Thuy Viet Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: Households in Thuy Viet have applied the production model: spring rice planting according to organic standards from seed selection to harvest, and summer crop land preparation to create a living environment for earthworms.
To develop a sustainable rice-worm model, the locality organizes propaganda, technical training, and transfers the model to the people. Support people in choosing high-quality rice varieties to organize production on the area where the worms are harvested annually, applying the process of organic rice production combined with the farming of worms. From the effectiveness of this model, Thuy Viet commune is planning to expand to an area of over 90 hectares.
To have an abundant source of earthworms as it is today, the people of Thuy Viet have had to spend a lot of time and effort to improve the living source of earthworms. Thereby creating jobs and stable income for the people, contributing to promoting the development of the local economy and society.
