General rehearsal of the national celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital.

Exactly 70 years ago, after 9 years of long and arduous resistance, the indomitable and brave fighting spirit of our army and people, especially with the victory of the Dien Bien Phu campaign in 1954, the French colonialists were forced to sign the Geneva Agreement on July 21, 1954 on the cessation of hostilities in Vietnam, recognizing the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the three countries of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia; accepting the withdrawal of troops from the North of our country.

On the morning of October 10, 1954, the City Military Commission and military units divided into many large groups to launch a historic march into Hanoi . More than 400,000 people in the capital were excited in the forest of flags and flowers, with extreme joy welcoming the victorious army back.

At 3 p.m. the same day, the army and people of Hanoi, on behalf of the people of the whole country, held a flag-saluting ceremony and listened to a letter from President Ho Chi Minh: “For the past eight years, the Government has had to leave the Capital to fight for national salvation. Although we are far apart, the Government’s heart is always close to the people. Today, thanks to the unity of our army and people, our army fought bravely and the resistance was victorious. The Government has returned to the Capital with the people. Thousands of miles away, one home, the joy is indescribable…”.

The takeover of the Capital was a great success. We safely and quickly took over 129 offices, public works, factories, hospitals, schools, including military positions and important headquarters such as Hanoi Citadel, Water Station, Bach Mai airport, Gia Lam airport, Governor's Palace, North Vietnam Prime Minister's Palace, Federal Secret Service. People's lives remained normal and stable. Electricity, water, transportation and communications operated smoothly, political security and social order were maintained.

Over the past 70 years, Hanoi has achieved many strong developments, always maintained good growth and contributed positively to the country's growth. However, as the capital, the national political and administrative center, a major center of culture, science, education and economy of the whole country, Hanoi still carries within itself the "aspiration to become a dragon" with the stature of a smart - modern - worthy urban area.
