Speaking to Giao Thong Newspaper from the scene, Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Railways Corporation, said that the railway strives to complete and clear the landslide area in Ha Tinh early tomorrow morning (October 31).
Railway workers braved the rain and worked through the night to rescue a landslide that left rails hanging in Ha Tinh.
Mr. Tuan said that at the scene, there are 150 workers from Nghe Tinh Railway Joint Stock Company focusing on repairing the situation since this morning (October 30) and will dispatch about 80 more workers from Quang Binh Railway Joint Stock Company tonight to speed up the rescue process throughout the night.
However, the weather was not favorable, it was still raining so more areas were affected by whirlpools and erosion. While the landslide area was the only railway, there was no road, materials, manpower, and equipment had to be transported by train, then brought to the scene by cart.
"We are trying to rescue and fix the most seriously eroded and suspended rails; the other locations are being rescued and repaired at the same time. If the weather is more favorable, we will try to fix it by dawn tomorrow and clear the road," said Mr. Tuan.
Early this morning (October 30), prolonged heavy rain caused serious landslides on the North-South railway line at Km 354+900 - Km 355+750 in the Yen Due - Hoa Duyet section (Ha Tinh), with rocks washed away from the roadbed. By morning, heavy rain continued to cause landslides in many locations in this section, making it impossible for trains to run.
Some local erosion and landslide locations caused the road to slide off the sleeper rocks, with some sections about 8-9m deep, and at the same time, in many locations, the soil and rocks on the hill collapsed and buried the railway, about 800m3.
Because the landslide site has only one railway, materials and equipment must be brought to the scene by cart.
Nghe Tinh Railway Joint Stock Company has urgently mobilized human resources, machinery, equipment, and materials to organize remediation such as shoveling, scooping, and transporting landslides and rocks on the railway out of the railway safety area, and at the same time discharging boulders, stacking stone baskets, and piling masonry... on eroded and collapsed sections of the railway foundation.
Due to the impact of landslides, the railway had to transfer more than 600 passengers of 4 trains through Hoa Duyet - Yen Trung and temporarily stop running trains SE1, SE3, SE19 departing from Hanoi, and train SE20 departing from Da Nang.
