Along with millions of compatriots across the country heading to the North, the children of the Fatherland have created useful rafts made from plastic pipes, helping people in deep waters travel and transport goods.
Many days after Typhoon No. 3 Yagi landed in the North, the provinces had very heavy rain. Rising river water caused widespread flooding and landslides in many places. A series of houses and crops were submerged in water, making people's lives difficult and deprived. The group of Mr. Bui Trong Thanh, Gia Cam ward, Viet Tri city, came up with the idea of making plastic tube rafts with low investment costs and high applicability for people in flood-affected areas.
Mr. Thanh shared: “After storm No. 3 passed, many other localities in the North were heavily affected by storms and floods. I was lucky to live in a place that was not heavily affected by storms and floods. Feeling sorry for the people, my friends and I supported and donated necessities and food to people in flooded areas.
The plastic pipes are joined together and secured with sturdy iron braces. Each raft designed as above can withstand a load of about 200kg, can carry 2-3 people and goods. The advantages of the raft are simple design, materials are easily purchased locally, easy to float, difficult to overturn when moving, high safety. The total cost for a raft is about 1.3 million VND.
After the first raft was built and proved effective in floods, his group shared the idea and received support from friends and benefactors to build more rafts.
Mr. Thanh added that the group started making rafts on September 11, with 7 members, including women in charge of food support for the people, and men in charge of installing the rafts and transporting them to areas in need of relief. Up to now, Mr. Thanh's group has supported flooded areas in and outside the province with 7 rafts.
In fact, when heavy rain and floods occur over a large area, with limited rescue equipment, these rafts have been effective in moving people and property, bringing high efficiency and practicality to low-lying areas. The useful initiative of Mr. Thanh's group is highly appreciated in enhancing the capacity to respond to floods.
