Along with millions of compatriots across the country heading to the North, the children of the Fatherland have created useful rafts made from plastic pipes, supporting people in deep water areas to travel and transport goods.

Many days after Typhoon No. 3 Yagi made landfall in the North, the provinces experienced heavy rain. Rising river water caused widespread flooding and landslides in many places. Many houses and crops were submerged in water, causing people's lives to fall into poverty and hardship. The group of Mr. Bui Trong Thanh, Gia Cam Ward, Viet Tri City, came up with the idea of making plastic tube rafts with low investment costs and high applicability for people in flooded areas.

Mr. Thanh shared: “After storm No. 3 passed, many other localities in the North were severely affected by storms and floods. I was lucky to live in a place that was not heavily affected by storms and floods. Feeling sorry for the people, my friends and I supported and donated necessities and food to people in flooded areas.

The plastic pipes are joined together and secured with sturdy iron braces. Each raft designed as above can withstand a load of about 200kg, and can carry 2-3 people and goods. The advantages of the raft are its simple design, easily purchased local materials, easy to float, difficult to tip over when moving, and high safety. The total cost for a raft is about 1.3 million VND.

After the first raft was built and proved effective in floods, his team shared the idea and received support from friends and benefactors to build more rafts.

Mr. Thanh added that the group started making rafts on September 11, with 7 members, including women in charge of food support for the people, and men who installed the rafts and transported them to areas in need of relief. Up to now, Mr. Thanh's group has supported flooded areas in and outside the province with 7 rafts.

In fact, when heavy rain and floods occur over a large area, with limited rescue equipment, these rafts have responded well to the movement of people and property, bringing high efficiency and practicality to low-lying areas. The useful initiative of Mr. Thanh's group is highly appreciated in enhancing the capacity to respond to floods.
