Many farmers in Vinh Long province have invented agricultural tools that are very simple but bring great benefits to production. These products are quickly widely applied, making an important contribution to the local socio-economic development.

Through these movements, more and more farming households have applied technical advances to production, boldly transforming crop and livestock structures to suit market conditions and needs.

Many models have large-scale production, attract a lot of labor and bring high economic efficiency. Up to now, Vinh Long province has more than 337 thousand farming households achieving the title of good production and business at all levels.

Necessity is the mother of invention

These days, when passing through the “sweet potato kingdom” of Binh Tan district, Vinh Long province, many people are truly amazed by the way the potatoes are watered. At first glance, one can see a person standing holding one end of a pole watering the potatoes, the other end of the pole has no one holding or supporting it but still watering...

Mr. Le Van Be Tu, 69 years old, residing in Tan Yen hamlet, Tan Thanh commune, Binh Tan district, Vinh Long province, is one of the farmers who has been growing sweet potatoes for many years here. He said that his family has been growing sweet potatoes since before 1975.

At first, they only planted a few hectares (one hectare equals 1,000 square meters), but the couple had to carry buckets to water from two to three in the morning to keep up. Over the past decades of watering potatoes, his family has gone through many stages of changing watering tools. From carrying buckets to watering on their backs, to building their own boat to install the watering machine...

Mr. Le Van Be Tu, a farmer in Tan Yen hamlet, Tan Thanh commune, Binh Tan district, Vinh Long province, waters his sweet potato field using a tool invented by the farmer himself.

Before switching to using plastic pipes for irrigation like today, watering was done with iron pipes. Watering with iron pipes required two people, each holding one end of the plant to water, compared to now, only one person can water the potatoes at any time.

In particular, it not only reduces the number of people watering, but also makes watering much faster. Mr. Be Tu shared: “The method of watering potatoes with plastic pipes has appeared in this area for about four years. At first, I didn’t believe it. When I saw it with my own eyes, I saw its effectiveness.

However, the way to drill holes in the plastic pipe is also very important, so that the water sprays evenly and especially thanks to the water's thrust, the other end of the pipe automatically balances up and down according to the way you customize your machine's throttle to suit.

From making for home use, my family now makes and sells to neighbors for their own use. Thanks to these small inventions, farmers here no longer have to worry about watering their potatoes like before.”

In each region, with each type of fruit, people have their own creativity in production. When we came to the orange growing area of Tra On district, Vinh Long province, we witnessed the image of farmers harvesting oranges and transporting them on long tarpaulins on the ditches like a giant snake.

According to locals, each such transport can carry from three to five tons of oranges depending on the length of the tarpaulin, a productivity that is dozens of times greater than that of a single worker.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phuong Thuy-Tra On Orange Cooperative Nguyen Tan Phuong said that currently, his family is managing hundreds of hectares of oranges but is not worried about care or harvesting.

Taking advantage of farming tools, people make other tools to use in orange production from pond renovation, spraying pesticides as well as harvesting, all quickly and effectively. Mr. Phuong has been growing oranges for about 20 years, at first manual production was very difficult.

After harvesting and transporting to the road, each bag must be carried; two people carry two bags of about 60 kg. Now, a tarpaulin can pull three to five tons of oranges at a time, and only one or two people can pull it very quickly.

“Specifically, in the past, a person sprayed pesticides on only 0.5 hectares per day, but now a sprayer can spray 5 hectares per day. With the current price, a person can work for about 500,000 VND/day, and can only spray 0.5 hectares; but now, for only 500,000 VND, I can hire someone to spray 5 hectares…

Moreover, for about three years now, the family has made a mud pump from a rice-sucking machine, and three people can pump 2.5 hectares in just one day. Meanwhile, in the past, three people could not do one hectare. With the current price, I rent about one million VND/hectare, if I use a machine, the cost is only over 100,000 VND/hectare...”, Mr. Phuong calculated.

Replicating innovation

Mr. On Thanh Ngan, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tra On district, said: In recent years, many farmers have boldly researched, explored and invented the application of scientific, technical and new technological advances in production, bringing high economic efficiency such as 100% mechanization of land preparation, sowing and harvesting rice; orange farmers use watering machines, fertilizer sprayers, pesticide sprayers, etc.

In 2023, the district newly established 29 professional associations with 660 members; currently, the total number is 32 professional associations with 724 members and 73 association groups with 881 members.

Branches and professional associations create cohesion among members when they share common interests and responsibilities in production, business, services and operate stably and effectively. Some good models contribute to helping farmers develop, expand production scale, increase profits and income.

According to the Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Binh Tan District, Tru Trung Tin, thanks to the application of improvements in agricultural production, the associations at all levels in the district have effectively implemented production and harvesting models. In 2023, for sweet potatoes alone, the authorities issued 27 growing area codes with an area of over 584 hectares for 646 participating households…

The movement of farmers competing in production and business to unite and help each other to get rich and reduce poverty sustainably is one of the three key movements launched by the Farmers' Association. Up to now, it has developed into a widespread mass movement in the district, attracting a large number of cadres, members and farmers to participate. Many farming households have overcome difficulties to escape poverty sustainably, become well-off and rich households, creating more jobs and improving their lives.

Vice President of the Farmers' Association of Vinh Long Province Nguyen Thi Dieu Hien said: "The most important goal of the movement of good farmers in production and business is to promote the dynamism and creativity in labor, production and business to achieve high economic efficiency of farmer members, thereby helping farmer members in difficulty to develop production, contributing to improving their lives.

From the above movements, many advanced models have emerged, representing the spirit of hard work, creativity, self-reliance and self-improvement of the peasant class. The whole province has more than 66 thousand households achieving the title of good farmer families in production and business at all levels.
