In 2024, the damage caused by natural disasters in the province is estimated at about 11.4 billion VND. Of which, there were 65 landslides and subsidence of riverbanks, canals, and streams, with an estimated total damage of about 2 billion VND, with a total length of nearly 2.3 km; affecting 51 houses, down 50% compared to 2023 (129 incidents, landslides of 6.7 km, affecting 90 houses). A typical example is the incident of landslides and subsidence of the dike surface on September 20, 2024 on the dike line on the North bank of Xang Canal (level III dike system in the East of Bay Xa Canal, Tan Chau Town), 20m long, about 3m deep inland. The most serious damage was still caused by thunderstorms, whirlwinds, and lightning (estimated total damage of 9.4 billion VND), killing 1 person and injuring 3 others.
As of December 31, 2024, the province had 51 thunderstorms, causing 413 houses to collapse and have their roofs blown off. This situation recorded a decrease of 4 incidents, but an increase of 281 affected houses compared to 2023. In addition, thunderstorms also caused trees to fall, affecting power lines; collapsed school roofs, blew off the roofs of 5 boat houses, and a work camp with an area of 216 square meters. At the same time, 33 hectares of rice, crops, and nearly 6 hectares of fruit trees were damaged. Damage to agricultural production decreased significantly compared to 2023, because the time of the thunderstorms coincided with the time when people had finished harvesting the summer-autumn crop in 2024.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thanh Hung (Deputy Chief of Staff of the Provincial Military Command), in the past year, agencies and units have coordinated well in implementing the plan for coordinating tasks of responding to disasters, incidents, natural disasters and search and rescue of the Provincial Military Command; proactively coordinating propaganda, promptly organizing forces and mobile means to respond to help people overcome the consequences of natural disasters, tornadoes, landslides, protect the safety of life and property, overcome the consequences, and stabilize people's lives. More than 3,000 officers and soldiers have participated (nearly 1,000 soldiers, more than 2,000 militiamen). The Provincial Military Command has deployed and coordinated with relevant agencies and units to regularly ensure forces, means, and materials, ready to mobilize to perform tasks; strictly implementing the reporting regime when incidents and natural disasters occur in the area.
Promoting the spirit of close coordination, units continue to proactively respond to disasters, incidents, natural disasters and search and rescue in 2025, not to cause human casualties, and to minimize damage to State and People's property in the area. At the 2025 Disaster Response, Incident, Natural Disaster and Search and Rescue Coordination Conference, units deployed directions and tasks for the year; anticipated some situations and areas where natural disasters may occur and People's evacuation areas; organized coordination and cooperation of forces and mobile vehicles to support and rescue when situations occur... According to Colonel Nguyen Van Hien (Deputy Commander, Chief of Staff of the Provincial Military Command), the coordination conference is the basis for the Provincial Military Command and agencies and units to draw experience, promote advantages, and overcome limitations in performing tasks in 2024; Continue to direct coordination work, closely carry out tasks in 2025, and achieve good results.
“Request the Standing Office of the Provincial Steering Committee for Climate Change Response - Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Civil Defense to regularly provide weather information to agencies and units to proactively coordinate in performing tasks. Coordinated units (Provincial Police, Provincial Border Guard Command, units under Military Region 9, Ministry of Public Security ) coordinate with local armed forces to effectively implement the 2025 coordination plan; be ready to mobilize and support forces according to the coordination and request of the Provincial Military Command when natural disasters occur in the area. At the same time, coordinate to inspect areas at risk of landslides, floods, tornadoes, etc.; have plans and measures to handle them from the beginning, not to be passive in the area and area under their responsibility. The implementation process needs to thoroughly grasp and flexibly apply the motto "4 on-site", focusing on not causing human losses due to subjective errors. Each agency strictly maintains the task of combat readiness associated with disaster response, "Incidents, natural disasters and search and rescue; regularly ensure forces, means, equipment and materials are ready to mobilize" - Colonel Nguyen Van Hien emphasized.
The joint effort to prevent and combat natural disasters does not only belong to the armed forces and specialized sectors, but also to local departments, sectors and organizations, through propaganda and dissemination to raise people's awareness, to protect themselves and their property from natural disasters. Local Party committees and authorities pay attention to purchasing and supplementing means, equipment and materials to ensure the performance of tasks; regularly practice and rehearse natural disaster prevention and combat at all levels, to be ready to respond to all possible situations.
