The pregnant woman, NTT (25 years old, from Kim Hy commune, Na Ri district, Bac Kan province), was admitted to the hospital to give birth at 36 weeks and 4 days of pregnancy. Ultrasound images showed that the pregnant woman was carrying triplets. Therefore, to ensure the safety of both mother and baby, doctors at Phu Tho Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital ordered a cesarean section.
The babies were born healthy ( photo ): the baby boy weighed 2 kg; the baby girl weighed 2.1 kg and 1.9 kg.
Doctors performing the surgery said that of the three fetuses, the male fetuses had different eggs, one placenta, and one amniotic sac; the two female fetuses had two amniotic sacs, sharing an egg and placenta.
This is the first pregnancy of the NTT mother and she got pregnant naturally. During the pregnancy, the mother's health was stable. To ensure a safe pregnancy, she had a full pregnancy check-up at the hospital, was prescribed a cervical cerclage by the doctors at the appropriate gestational week to maintain the pregnancy and was advised to inject lung maturation for the fetus.
MSc.-BS Hoang Thi Chung, Head of Department of Obstetrics 1 - Phu Tho Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said that this is an extremely rare case of triplets because the mother naturally carried 3 babies, 1 baby from a different egg and 2 babies from the same egg. The rate of this case is about 1/200,000 births.
Dr. Chung noted: Pregnant women with multiple pregnancies need to pay attention to their diet as the nutritional needs of the fetus double, triple...; mothers need to provide more nutrients to reduce the risk of malnutrition for newborns later. Adequate rest, need to rest a lot, relax, avoid overwork to avoid the risk of pregnancy complications.
