Many other companies are also posting job openings for garment workers, general laborers, and various other positions with no limit on the number of applicants. Not to mention, this is also the time when many small, family-run garment factories with 3-10 employees are looking to hire workers.

It is difficult to recruit garment workers.
A quick survey of recruitment in District 12 and Binh Tan shows that many companies are expanding production, opening new production lines, and need to recruit several hundred workers. Some smaller companies also need to recruit 20-100 people, from workers to team leaders, quality control, and machine maintenance, with salaries ranging from 8-16 million VND.
"The company plans to add a few more production lines, so it needs around 250 workers. The company hopes to recruit skilled workers; only when that proves difficult will they recruit unskilled workers for training," said Mr. Le Van Quang, head of recruitment at BN Jeans garment company (District 12).
According to Mr. Quang, in recent years, recruiting skilled garment workers in Ho Chi Minh City has been quite difficult due to competition from neighboring factories in Dong Nai, Binh Duong, and Long An provinces. On the first working day after the Tet holiday, many workers came to the company to inquire about job opportunities, but "most are still hesitating and haven't applied yet."
To attract workers, the company offers a bonus scheme for skilled workers, with 1.5 million VND for the first month, 1 million VND for the second month, and 1.5 million VND for the third month. Workers who wish to learn sewing will receive free training along with a training allowance.
Meanwhile, almost all workers at Song Ngoc Garment Company (Binh Tan District) returned to work on the very first day. The company's union chairman, Tran Thanh Son, said the company is currently recruiting approximately 300 more workers for its plan to open four new sewing lines.
"Regarding orders, it's impossible to say for sure, but businesses still need to proactively prepare the necessary conditions in terms of facilities and labor before partners will consider placing orders. Skilled and hardworking workers can earn around 10 million VND or more per month, but they need stable employment and familiarity with the products to achieve good income," Mr. Son said.
52,000 jobs are waiting for applicants.
According to a quick report from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the city needs approximately 52,000 workers after the Lunar New Year 2024. Of these, the trade and service sectors account for 71%, industry and construction 29%, and agriculture, forestry, and fisheries 1%. Approximately 87% of the recruitment demand is for trained workers, including 20% with elementary level qualifications, 28% with intermediate level qualifications, 20% with college degrees, and 20% with university degrees or higher.
Ms. Nguyen Van Hanh Thuc, director of the Employment Service Center (Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City), said that the recruitment needs of businesses have increased significantly after Tet, along with the fact that many businesses have received new production orders.
According to registrations at this center and other job exchanges, there are currently 102 businesses with recruitment needs for approximately 19,300 positions. Recruitment demand is concentrated in the footwear and garment industry (nearly 43%), general labor (12%), business and management (11%), information technology (6%), engineering and mechanics (5%), and other professions (23%).
In addition, the center also recorded 17,000 job search requests before and after the Lunar New Year. Job seekers' needs were concentrated in office administration, general labor, business and management, accounting and auditing, information technology, and several other fields.
Ready to support workers
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs announced that it will support job placement for workers directly at bus and train stations. Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City Employment Service Center, under the department, has established consultation desks and distributes leaflets at the Eastern, Western, and An Suong bus stations and Saigon Railway Station to receive registrations and provide free job referrals for workers.
The initiative aims to assist workers in finding reputable jobs and to curb fraudulent employment practices by unlicensed employment agencies.
Dong Nai: Over 90% of workers return to work.
According to the Dong Nai Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, most businesses in the area have resumed operations, with over 90% of their workforce returning after the Lunar New Year holiday. Mr. Le Nhat Truong, chairman of the trade union at Pousung Vietnam Co., Ltd. (Bau Xeo Industrial Park, Trang Bom district), stated that on the first day back to work, approximately 99% of nearly 18,000 employees returned. The company noted positive signs and planned for overtime work on the very first day of the return.
Mr. Dinh Sy Phuc, chairman of the trade union of Taekwang Vina Joint Stock Company (Bien Hoa 2 Industrial Park, Bien Hoa City), reported that the company restarted operations on February 16th, and approximately 90% of its nearly 32,000 employees returned to work on the first day with high spirits after the long holiday.
"Currently, 98% of the workers have returned to work. The company continues to welcome back the group of workers from distant hometowns. The trade union, in coordination with the company, has given lucky money to all workers who returned to work on the scheduled day, totaling nearly 6.5 billion VND. And we have prepared 50 gold bars to give to lucky workers who win prizes," Mr. Phuc said.
According to the Dong Nai Provincial Employment Service Center, approximately 150 businesses in the province need to recruit more than 14,000 workers, double the number compared to the same period in 2023, with unskilled laborers accounting for 96%. Notably, garment and footwear businesses have resumed recruitment with many attractive welfare policies.

Binh Duong: Businesses go out into the streets to recruit staff.
Observations at several large industrial parks such as VSIP 1, Dong An 1, and Song Than 1 in Binh Duong show that many large businesses have posted job announcements and set up desks to receive applications. Many people are also preparing their applications to submit.
Garment factories are in need of large numbers of unskilled laborers. However, only skilled workers are sought after, while unskilled or older workers have fewer opportunities.
Along a 1km stretch of Provincial Road DT743 (bordering Thuan An and Di An cities), at least five factories have posted recruitment notices, each seeking 300-1,000 unskilled laborers. Leading Star Vietnam Garment Co., Ltd. is advertising for up to 1,000 workers in various positions, with recruitment desks located at the company gates. Businesses are promising salaries ranging from 8 to 14 million VND per month.
According to Pham Van Tuyen, Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Binh Duong province, data compiled from various agencies shows that the rate of workers returning to factories this year, both inside and outside industrial zones, is very high. Approximately 94% of businesses and over 90% of workers have returned to work. Businesses outside industrial zones have seen 90% of their workers return, while this rate is over 91% in businesses within industrial zones.
Forecasts for the first six months of 2024 indicate that businesses in Binh Duong will need to recruit an additional 25,000-30,000 workers, primarily unskilled laborers, with skilled workers accounting for 80%.
