(CLO) An international airport in the UK's second largest city was evacuated and all flights were suspended for hours on Wednesday (October 23) due to a security alarm.
West Midlands Police in central England have ordered a partial closure of Birmingham Airport after receiving reports of a suspicious vehicle.
Airport officials advised passengers not to travel to the airport, while those already there were asked to leave the terminal with their luggage.
“We apologize for any inconvenience and disruption, but the safety and security of everyone at the airport is always our top priority,” the airport said in a statement.
West Midlands Police said the evacuation was “a precautionary measure” while the vehicle was examined by the bomb disposal team. After a search, the explosives team confirmed the vehicle was not dangerous and was no longer considered suspicious.
“Operations will gradually return to normal. All passengers are advised to check the latest flight information with their airline,” an airport spokesman said.
Birmingham Airport is the seventh busiest airport in the UK by passenger traffic and is home to airlines such as easyJet, Ryanair, TUI Airways and Jet2.com.
