ASML is the world's only manufacturer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines capable of meeting advanced chip foundry requirements, such as those for Apple's latest iPhone processors manufactured by Taiwan's TSMC.
The semiconductor industry is a key focus of cooperation among many countries.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is currently on a four-day visit to the Netherlands to explore ways to build a "semiconductor alliance" between the two countries. The South Korean leader visited the ASML headquarters with King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and toured the next-generation EUV production site.
“ Technological innovation led by ASML is becoming a powerful driving force of the fourth industrial revolution worldwide. Dutch semiconductor companies such as ASML and ASM are building new facilities for manufacturing, R&D, and talent training in South Korea, ” the South Korean presidential office said.
Meanwhile, Samsung is the world's largest manufacturer of memory chips, used in consumer devices such as smartphones and computers. South Korean chipmakers rely on ASML's EUV machines to produce chips faster and more efficiently than their competitors.
The statement also said ASML will partner with another South Korean chip giant, SK Hynix, the world's second-largest DRAM chip manufacturer, to reduce power consumption and costs for EUVs through hydrogen gas recycling technology.
President Yoon's administration affirmed that semiconductors are "a pillar of cooperation between South Korea and the Netherlands." He stated that the visit to the Netherlands aimed to help both countries "establish a well-organized institutional framework to comprehensively address global semiconductor supply chains," amidst the emergence of semiconductors as a strategic asset and the growing geopolitical risks surrounding global supply chains.
