Samsung Electronics and Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) announced that the Galaxy S24 Ultra will feature a new Corning Gorilla Armor glass material, which combines durability and clarity, delivering sharper images in bright sunlight and superior protection that minimizes wear and tear from everyday use.
Corning Gorilla Armor is a completely different kind of smartphone protection material. Compared to regular glass, Corning Gorilla Armor reduces light reflection by up to 75%, improving display readability and minimizing screen reflections in most environmental conditions.
“Corning Gorilla Glass, combined with the Galaxy S series, has driven further innovation and progress in improving product durability. This collaboration has brought absolute confidence and peace of mind to users when experiencing our products,” said Kwangjin Bae, Vice President and Head of Mechanical R&D Team, Mobile Experience Business at Samsung Electronics.
This new glass material from Corning optimizes durability on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. In Corning lab tests, Gorilla Armor demonstrated superior durability when compared to other aluminosilicate protective glasses. To evaluate the exceptional scratch resistance of this glass, Corning created a new test – the “Scratch Bot” – to simulate the small scratches from everyday use.
Gorilla Armor contains 25% post-consumer recycled content, verified by UL Solutions under the UL2809-2 Environmental Claims Validation Procedure (ECVP) for Recycled Material. In this rigorous test, Gorilla Armor showed no scratches, demonstrating 4x greater scratch resistance than other aluminosilicate glasses.
The launch of the Galaxy S24 Ultra mobile device featuring Gorilla Armor glass marks the one-year anniversary of Samsung and Corning’s partnership. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the partnership between the two industry leaders. Samsung and Corning first collaborated in 1973 to bring TVs to consumers in Korea.
“Gorilla Armor combines Corning’s research and engineering expertise with Samsung’s user experience-focused design,” said David Velasquez, vice president and general manager of Corning Gorilla Glass. “This latest innovation addresses not only the need for durability, but also the growing need for optics – delivering the mobile experience of the future, today.”
