Anticipating continued economic difficulties, many supermarkets and businesses have stated that they have proactively increased their stock of affordable goods. A representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Commercial Cooperative Union ( Saigon Co.op ) said that over 800 sales points nationwide, including Co.opmart, Co.opXtra, Co.op Food, etc., are also offering significant discounts, helping customers easily "bring Tet" home with price reductions on over 3,500 products.
Nearly 10 million Tet gift baskets sold in just two weeks.
From mid-December, at Co.opmart Cong Quynh supermarket (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), the Tet atmosphere permeated the stalls with vibrant apricot blossoms and peach branches, along with cheerful spring music, lively decorations, and a shopping space that became a vibrant "check-in" spot for people.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien (30 years old) was one of the last customers at the supermarket in the final days of the year. After three years working far from home, this year, Ms. Lien was finally able to arrange to return to her hometown in Thanh Hoa to celebrate Tet with her family. "My job in the service industry keeps me extremely busy all year, and it gets even busier as Tet approaches," Ms. Lien shared.
Pushing a large shopping cart through the supermarket, Ms. Lien meticulously selected each Tet gift for her family and friends. Choosing a bag of macadamia nuts, a bag of red apples, and a box of imported grapes, Ms. Lien said these would be snacks and treats for guests visiting her home, with the requirement that they be unique and hard to find in her hometown.
Besides searching for Tet gifts, Ms. Lien also took the opportunity to browse pre-packaged gift baskets. She commented that the supermarket's gift baskets had attractive designs and reasonable prices. "The quality of goods at Co.opmart is guaranteed, and I plan to buy some to give to friends who live far away," Ms. Lien said.
Meanwhile, Mai Anh, a real estate agent in Ho Chi Minh City, has a completely opposite feeling. As Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches, she is filled with more worries and anxieties than excitement and joy.
"In previous years, this was my busiest time, meeting with and showing appreciation to clients. But this year, the economic difficulties and the stagnant market have meant I've only signed a few small contracts all year. The commission isn't enough to cover my living expenses, let alone celebrate Tet," Mai Anh confided.
Recalling previous Lunar New Year celebrations, she said she usually spent around 20 million VND on gift baskets for business partners, clients, and bosses.
However, this year she had to cut her budget by more than 10 million VND, focusing only on loyal customers, major clients, and leaders to maintain business relationships. For other customers, she could only send greetings instead of gifts. "I'm afraid of being judged as not thoughtful enough, but I've really tried my best," she said.
In the current challenging economic climate, balancing work efficiency with cost savings has become a major concern for many. Affordable, attractive, and high-quality Tet gift baskets are more sought after than ever.
Responding to market demand, a representative from Saigon Co.op stated that the supermarket, in collaboration with its business partners, has increased the discount on Tet gift baskets to up to 20%. This discount includes promotional price reductions for each type of gift basket and applies to orders valued at 5 million VND or more.
According to statistics, in just two weeks since the Tet gift baskets were put on the shelves, the Co.opmart and Co.opXtra systems have seen a surge in sales, with supermarkets selling over 10 million Tet gift baskets through physical stores and online.
With a wide range of promotions and exciting experiential activities, sales at retail outlets increased by 30-40% compared to previous business months.
