Viet Duc Friendship Hospital said it will organize a free examination and consultation program for children with scoliosis from May 22 to 26 in Hanoi.
This is a program carried out annually by the hospital's Spinal Surgery Department with the hope that children with this disease will be treated promptly by leading domestic and foreign experts.
Most recently, through the first round of free examinations for children, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Long, Deputy Head of the Department of Spinal Surgery, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, directly examined and consulted a 4-year-old girl in Quang Ninh and a 16-year-old male patient in Bac Ninh, two typical cases of scoliosis.

Among them, a 4-year-old patient had scoliosis, a concave chest, asymmetrical shoulders, respiratory dysfunction, and a sternum deformity.
According to Dr. Long, a 4-year-old child with congenital scoliosis needs to be closely monitored, otherwise the lungs will be underdeveloped later on. Early detection and timely medical examination by the family will help find the best treatment plan.
Meanwhile, a 16-year-old male patient was discovered by his family to have scoliosis at the age of 2, and was diagnosed with polyneuropathy by a specialized hospital. Currently, the patient's scoliosis angle is up to 120 degrees, greatly affecting respiratory function and causing lung ventilation disorders.
Dr. Long said that this patient needs to have more tests on lung and cardiovascular function, and do more tests so that doctors can consult to find the cause and come up with a suitable treatment plan. If the patient is healthy enough for surgery, he will have to undergo two surgeries. One will be surgery to make the spine more flexible and then surgery to straighten it.
"However, even if the surgery is successful, it does not mean that the patient's spine will be straight like a normal person's because the curvature of the spine is too large. But if surgery is not performed soon, the compression of the nerve can cause paralysis for the patient," Dr. Long shared.
Early treatment is needed to avoid complications.
Associate Professor - Doctor Dinh Ngoc Son, Head of Spinal Surgery Department, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, added that the number of children with spinal curvature accounts for 0.5 - 1% of the population. Up to 80 - 85% of cases of spinal curvature have unknown causes, some are due to congenital diseases, or other diseases related to the nerves and muscles. In addition, many other cases of spinal curvature are due to sitting in the wrong position for a long time.
Early detection of scoliosis in children and timely treatment will help prevent and minimize complications that cause severe spinal deformities and seriously affect the development of other internal organs such as the lungs and chest, causing respiratory failure, threatening the health and life of children. If the disease is milder, it can affect the aesthetics and psychological development of children.
According to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves 10 degrees or more. Normally, the human spine is straight, and a curve of less than 10 degrees is acceptable. Timely detection and treatment will help children prevent the curve from getting worse, avoid unnecessary surgeries, and affect the quality of life.
