Ms. Nguyen Tran Nguyet Nga (a parent with two children attending junior high school in Long Xuyen City) shared: “Everyone knows that reading is good, helping children develop their brains better than receiving information one-way through listening and watching via devices. However, it must be admitted that adults themselves find it difficult to be good role models for their children, because of work and entertainment needs, everyone is more ‘addicted’ to their phones.” From another perspective, book lovers believe that daily habits are not just a choice, but also require discipline and clear goals. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the 4.0 era, book lovers still quietly enjoy the joy of discovering knowledge in cafes, bookstores, used bookshops, park corners, or even in their own homes.
The development of science and technology , and the dominance of various entertainment sources, are causing visual and auditory culture to overshadow reading culture. Today's youth have very rapid access to information, and reading habits are changing rapidly in terms of media and formats in a dynamic way. However, no medium stimulates thinking as much as reading physical books. Books not only provide knowledge but also train readers in skills, emotional thinking, and language development. This is also why schools are promoting solutions to help children love reading more.
No matter how much society develops, books never lose their inherent traditional cultural value. In the digital transformation era, publishing, printing, and distribution also transform, harmoniously integrating readers' habits in choosing books and bringing books closer to the public through the digital environment. Besides printed books, readers can choose from new forms of books, such as ebooks, audiobooks, videobooks , CD-ROMs, and DVD-ROMs.
Students participate in activities to celebrate Book and Reading Culture Day.
According to Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang, Director of the An Giang Provincial Library, this year the unit is organizing many activities to celebrate Book and Reading Culture Day. For primary school students, schools are coordinating with the provincial library to organize quizzes, exchanges, thematic talks, and drawing competitions to create interest in reading books and pictures. For secondary and high school students, the activities aim for a higher goal: spreading awareness and sharing knowledge with many people. Schools are organizing book exhibitions, storytelling competitions about favorite books, and competitions for writing reviews about books or literary works…
In addition to activities within the framework of Book and Reading Culture Day, in recent times, from the provincial to the grassroots level, many solutions have been implemented to bring books to readers. To ensure that reading is not just a monotonous and boring movement, many units have researched and organized fun, practical, and beneficial activities for students to participate in. A typical example is the activity model "One beautiful story, one good book, one shining example each week." With provincial support and social mobilization of funding, more and more schools are establishing "Green Libraries," "Friendly Libraries," and "Dream Libraries" in remote areas and ethnic minority regions. The green spaces, beautiful flowers, rich book selection, and play areas of the libraries have encouraged children to read more actively.
Besides the public library system from the provincial to the grassroots level, reading culture development activities are also organized in a mobile format, ensuring they are in line with current trends and requirements. In particular, the "Mobile Library" model of the Provincial Library, maintained over the years, has rotated throughout schools in the province. This "knowledge vehicle" is always eagerly awaited by students as they choose books according to their interests and age, explore interesting content, and enjoy fun book-related quizzes. Students are also guided on using social media, searching for materials, and accessing information from the Internet to support their studies and develop skills.
The 4th Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day in 2025 will take place from April 15th to May 2nd, 2025 nationwide, with the messages "Reading Culture - Connecting Communities," "Together with books, we enter an era of national progress," and "Reading books - enriching knowledge, nurturing aspirations, promoting innovation and creativity." Annually, activities in response to this event are not only concentrated in provinces and cities, but have also been emphasized and implemented at the grassroots level, in rural and mountainous areas, and in other disadvantaged regions. |
