Vietnam Circular Economy Forum 2024: SABECO shares from plan to action
Promoting a circular economy through innovations in sustainable packaging, water management and energy efficiency helps businesses, especially SABECO, reduce emissions, improve competitiveness and promote a green supply chain.
At the 3rd Vietnam Circular Economy Forum (2024) hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on December 10 in Hanoi, Mr. Lam Du An, Deputy General Director in charge of production of SABECO, affirmed that SABECO always innovates, strengthens cooperation with partners and local communities, and invests in sustainable technologies. Together, we can build a circular economy where waste is minimized, resources are preserved, and environmental impacts are reduced, ensuring a bright future for Vietnam.
At SABECO and its member companies, SABECO is committed to producing quality beverage products, adhering to a sustainable development strategy, and circular economy is one of the important strategies in the journey of sustainable development.
“Applying the principles of the circular economy, which offers a promising solution to reduce waste, optimize resources and reduce environmental impact, helps us spread sustainable development in the beer industry and the community,” said Mr. An.
Applying circular economy at SABECO
SABECO is operating a 100% reusable and recyclable packaging model and is aiming for 100% biodegradable packaging by 2040. In particular, since 2019, by implementing improvements in product packaging design, SABECO has reduced packaging weight, significantly contributing to cost reduction and material reduction.
In compliance with the Environmental Protection Law on the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), SABECO has cooperated with partner PRO VIETNAM with the aim of continuing to strengthen and promote the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility, promoting the company's sustainable development goals and contributing to the country's green growth goals.
Along with that, SABECO will work with other members of the alliance to contribute to building regulations and policies related to extended producer responsibility effectively and in accordance with the business environment in Vietnam.
In 2024, PRO Vietnam aims to collect and recycle about 70,000 tons of packaging of all kinds; promote communication to change consumer awareness; collect and recycle packaging waste; support workers working in the collection sector.
Regarding water resource management, SABECO has introduced many solutions. Over 50 water and energy management initiatives have been launched within 5 years, SABECO has reduced 65% of water consumption in production. Moving forward in 2026, SABECO aims to reduce 75% of water usage and all wastewater will be treated and released into natural resources.
Specifically, in 2024, SABECO successfully reduced the amount of water produced to 2.86 liters of water/liter of beer compared to 3 liters of water/liter of beer in 2022, and 7 liters of water/liter of beer in 2019. SABECO is committed to continuing to improve, aiming for 1.5 liters of water/liter of beer in the next 2 years.
With energy management, SABECO also builds many initiatives, expected to reduce 43% of electricity usage, equivalent to 65,000 tons of CO2 emissions. By 2026, it will reduce 50% or 60%, equivalent to about 75,000 tons of CO2 emissions. In addition, SABECO also takes advantage of renewable energy sources such as solar energy, the plan is that by 2026 the company will use 50% of renewable energy sources.
Currently, 12 out of 26 factories have installed solar power, meeting about 23% of the electricity consumption of the entire system. And continue to expand the installation to the entire roof area, estimated to provide 37% of electricity consumption needs.
The trend is irreversible.
Currently, the trend of transitioning to a green economy and a circular economy is becoming an inevitable, objective, irreversible trend and is the goal of many countries in the world to develop economic prosperity, environmental sustainability and ensure social justice.
According to Mr. An, circular economy is popular in the world and many Asian countries such as China, Japan, Singapore have been successful. That is an opportunity for SABECO to research and apply to deploy circular economy strategy for the company.
Second, it is currently in the fourth industrial development phase. Therefore, the company can apply scientific advances in SABECO's circular economy strategy.
The application of circular economy also helps the country's resources to be maintained for the next generation and creates clean air. This will be supported by society, so that is the advantage that SABECO implements when applying the circular economy strategy.
SABECO builds a sustainable development strategy focusing on 4 main goals: Country - Culture - Conservation - Consumption.
Activities contribute to building the country, focusing on promoting and supporting the development of young talents; accompanying young people in starting a business, supporting livelihoods, training and improving competitiveness for small and medium-sized businesses, encouraging and honoring workers with outstanding achievements.
Cultural preservation activities aim to encourage healthy and active cultural lifestyles in the community, such as physical training sports activities, cultural activities to train and improve spiritual life.
In addition, activities promoting a healthy lifestyle are promoted to communicate and raise awareness of a healthy lifestyle and responsible drinking in the community, especially among young people. Promoting sustainable development through activities that encourage young people to join hands in protecting the environment.
