Promoting the circular economy through initiatives in sustainable packaging, water management, and energy efficiency helps businesses, especially SABECO, reduce emissions, enhance competitiveness, and promote green supply chains.

At the 3rd Vietnam Circular Economy Forum (2024), chaired by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and held on December 10th in Hanoi, Mr. Lam Du An, Deputy General Director in charge of production at SABECO, affirmed that SABECO is always innovating, strengthening cooperation with partners and local communities, and investing in sustainable technologies. Together, we can build a circular economy where waste is minimized, resources are conserved, and environmental impacts are reduced, ensuring a better future for Vietnam.

At SABECO and its member companies, SABECO is committed to producing high-quality beverage products, steadfastly pursuing a sustainable development strategy, and recognizing the circular economy as one of the key strategies in its sustainable development journey.

"By applying the principles of the circular economy, we offer promising solutions to minimize waste, optimize resources, and reduce environmental impact, helping us spread sustainable development in the beer industry and the community," Mr. An said.

Applying the circular economy at SABECO

SABECO is operating a model of 100% reusable and recyclable packaging and is aiming for 100% biodegradable packaging by 2040. In particular, since 2019, through improvements in product packaging design, SABECO has reduced packaging weight, significantly contributing to cost reduction and material savings.

In compliance with the Environmental Protection Law regarding the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), SABECO has partnered with PRO VIETNAM with the goal of further strengthening and promoting the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility, advancing the company's sustainable development goals, and contributing to the country's green growth objectives.

In addition, SABECO, together with other members of the alliance, will contribute to building regulations and policies related to extended producer liability in an effective manner and in line with the business environment in Vietnam.

In 2024, PRO Vietnam aims to collect and recycle approximately 70,000 tons of various types of packaging; promote communication to change consumer awareness; collect and recycle packaging waste; and support workers in the collection sector.

Regarding water resource management, SABECO has implemented numerous solutions. Over 50 water and energy management initiatives have been launched within 5 years, resulting in a 65% reduction in water consumption in production. Looking ahead to 2026, SABECO aims to reduce water usage by 75% and treat all wastewater before integrating it back into natural resources.

Specifically, in 2024, SABECO successfully reduced the amount of water used in production to 2.86 liters of water per liter of beer, compared to 3 liters of water per liter in 2022 and 7 liters of water per liter in 2019. SABECO is committed to further improvements, aiming for 1.5 liters of water per liter of beer within the next two years.

In terms of energy management, SABECO has also developed many initiatives, projected to reduce electricity consumption by 43%, corresponding to 65,000 tons of CO2 emissions. By 2026, the goal is to reduce emissions by 50% or 60%, equivalent to approximately 75,000 tons of CO2. Furthermore, SABECO is utilizing renewable energy sources such as solar power, with a plan to use 50% renewable energy by 2026.

Currently, 12 out of 26 factories have installed solar power, meeting approximately 23% of the total electricity consumption of the entire system. And the installation is continuing to expand to cover the entire roof area, estimated to supply 37% of the electricity demand.

An irreversible trend

Currently, the trend towards a green economy and circular economy is becoming an inevitable, objective, and irreversible trend, and is the goal of many countries around the world to achieve economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and social equity.

According to Mr. An, the circular economy is becoming popular worldwide, and many Asian countries such as China, Japan, and Singapore have been successful. This presents an opportunity for SABECO to research and apply it to implement a circular economy strategy for the company.

Secondly, the company is currently in the fourth industrial revolution. Therefore, it can apply scientific advancements to SABECO's circular economy strategy.

The application of a circular economy also helps to preserve the country's resources for future generations and create a cleaner environment. This will receive social support, and these are the advantages that SABECO has when applying its circular economy strategy.

SABECO's sustainable development strategy focuses on four main objectives: Country - Culture - Conservation - Consumption.

Activities contribute to nation-building, focusing on promoting and supporting the development of young talents; accompanying young people in starting and establishing businesses, supporting livelihoods, training and enhancing the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises, and encouraging and honoring outstanding workers.

Cultural preservation activities aim to encourage a healthy and positive cultural lifestyle in the community, such as sports activities for physical training and cultural activities to cultivate and enhance spiritual life.

In addition, activities promoting a healthy lifestyle are being intensified to communicate and raise awareness about healthy living and responsible drinking in the community, especially among young people. Sustainable development is promoted through activities that encourage young people to work together to protect the environment.
