Cassava fields are full of tubers, why are traders in Tay Ninh crying?

Báo Dân ViệtBáo Dân Việt28/07/2024

In recent years, cassava cultivation has brought stability to farmers, with “supply less than demand”, the cassava area in Tay Ninh province only meets part of the demand of more than 50 cassava factories operating in the area.

Therefore, cassava prices are always high, along with the purchasing competition of cassava traders.

In the area of Phuoc Ninh and Phuoc Minh communes (Duong Minh Chau district, Tay Ninh province), in early July, cassava fields have been and are being harvested by farmers.

At the cassava purchasing points in the above area, traders bring cassava to gather and transport to cassava factories in the province. This year, cassava purchasing traders all complained of losses.

The reason given by traders is that this year's hot weather has resulted in a decrease in cassava output, with each hectare of cassava yield ranging from 23.5 to 26 tons of flour.

The current cassava purchasing price applied by factories is about 3,600 VND/kg for cassava with 30 starches.

However, prolonged hot weather affected yields, followed by continuous heavy rains that resulted in low starch content in cassava.

The reason why farmers "hit it big" while noodle traders lose money is because traders compete to buy immature noodles that are only a few months old.

Traders compete to buy a hectare of cassava that has not been harvested for 100 million VND or even more. But this year the weather is erratic, the harvested cassava has low starch content, and the yield is reduced; traders have to spend more money on harvesting, so after deducting costs, most of them are sure to lose money.

Mr. Le Van Tung (living in Phuoc Minh commune, Duong Minh Chau district) who both grows cassava and is a cassava trader said that due to the prolonged hot weather, it was impossible to irrigate the cassava plants. After that, heavy rains continuously caused flooding, although the water drained quickly, it caused the cassava tubers to lose starch. This year's cassava season, Mr. Tung's investment suffered a heavy loss.

A cassava starch processing business owner in Duong Minh Chau district said that with the current price of about 3,600 VND/kg, cassava farmers cannot lose money; while traders are "harming each other" when competing to buy "young cassava" at high prices, and encountering erratic weather that causes cassava to lose starch, so losses are understandable.
