(Dan Tri) - The coastal mangrove forest of Thai Thuy is like a wall to respond to climate change, balance ecology, and stabilize sustainable livelihoods of people in estuaries and coastal areas...
The beautiful mangrove forest is the source of life for the people of Thai Thuy beach (Video: Huu Nghi).
The total mangrove forest area of Thai Thuy district is 2,675 hectares, concentrated in 5 coastal communes: Thuy Truong; Thuy Hai; Thuy Xuan; Thai Do; Thai Thuong, of which Thuy Truong commune has the largest forest area (909 hectares). This forest area forms a solid shield to protect sea dykes, prevent storms, floods, high tides, and minimize damage caused by natural disasters at sea. The main tree species planted are mangrove, sycamore, acacia, and su. Planting density is 1,600-2,500 trees/ha. The forest is planted in coastal wetlands, stretching from the dike to the sea for 4-5km. Thai Thuy is the locality with the largest mangrove forest area in Thai Binh province. They manually catch aquatic products such as snails, crabs, clams... on the edge of the forest, earning 300,000-500,000 VND/day. In the wetlands of Thai Thuy district, marine resources are very rich. People in Thuy Xuan, Thuy Hai, Thuy Truong communes... often go to catch cockles following the tide. Photo of a group of people going through the mangrove forest to hunt cockles in the sea of Thuy Hai commune. The time to catch cockles depends on the tides each month and each day. During the 10th lunar month, they will start going to sea at 4pm and return at midnight. The people who catch cockles are mainly women, because this is considered lighter work than catching seafood with nets by men.
The tools for catching snails are quite simple, either using an iron rod with a hook at the end, or using a 3-pronged rake to dig. On average, a woman catches 5-7kg/session, the selling price at the beach is 55,000 VND/kg. The mangrove forests of Thai Thuy district continue to be expanded, thus improving the ecological environment. Wherever the forests grow, shrimp, crabs, clams, etc. flock to live there. Currently, Thai Thuy has planted more mangrove trees with strong roots and are taller to block storms better. The coastal wetland of Thai Binh is located in the estuary of Thai Binh river, which is the premise for the development of the mangrove forest in Thai Thuy district.
