Rodri: "Spanish player deserves the Golden Ball"

"Spanish football deserves a FIFA Ballon d'Or winner," midfielder Rodri said after Spain's 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final on July 15.

After an impressive performance to help Spain win their fourth Euro title in history, midfielder Rodri was awarded the Player of the Tournament award. The Manchester City midfielder played in six of Spain's seven matches, scoring one goal and completing 92.84% of his passes.

Coach Luis de la Fuente praised Rodri's performance, saying: "For me, Rodri is the best player in the world , please give him the Ballon d'Or right now."

However, when asked by reporters about his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or, Rodri said: "I'll be honest, I want a Spaniard to win this award, I don't care who.

I think Real Madrid's Dani Carvajal is very deserving. Personally, I'm very proud of what I'm doing and the title I've been given.

But winning the Ballon d'Or depends on everyone's assessment. I came here to win the Euro 2024 championship."

The Man City midfielder added: "The Spanish team has overcome an unprecedentedly difficult tournament. Spain has the courage to face it, so we became champions. The whole team will not stop here."

Spanish right-back Dani Carvajal (who previously won the Champions League and La Liga with Real Madrid) echoed Rodri's sentiments, saying: "I hope a Spaniard wins the Ballon d'Or.

I think Spanish football deserves this award. I would love for it to happen.

I think I could be among the candidates not only for the titles I won this year but also for my performance. But this award is something I never dreamed of winning."

In the history of Spanish football, only the late Barcelona legend Luis Suarez has won the Ballon d'Or in 1960.
