The above comments and forecasts were just shared by Mr. Hoang Nam Tien, Vice Chairman of FPT University Council at the seminar "Career development during economic recession" organized by FSB Institute of Management and Technology under FPT University in collaboration with Navigos Search on the afternoon of October 19 in Hanoi.
Regarding the general picture of human resource recruitment in Vietnam, Ms. Ngo Thi Ngoc Lan, Northern Regional Director of Navigos Search, said that from around October 2022 until now, many businesses in Vietnam have encountered difficulties.
Navigos' survey of manufacturing enterprises shows that at least 50% of enterprises face a decline in revenue, of which up to 90% of enterprises are affected. However, a recent survey conducted by Navigos with most enterprises in many different industries including IT shows that enterprises all said they were affected and faced difficulties in the period after the Covid-19 pandemic.
When a business is in trouble, it will of course affect its employees. Specifically, businesses will lay off or reduce the salaries of their employees. And although there are still businesses that need to recruit new employees, according to Ms. Ngo Thi Ngoc Lan, the requirements for candidates have changed compared to the previous period.
Navigos Search representative in the North analyzed that in the past, a candidate with a score of 5-6/10 was still accepted by the company. Currently, a candidate with this average score will not have the opportunity to be recruited by the company. Now, the company requires candidates to achieve a score of 8, 9/10, showing that the candidate is not simply able to do the current job but also needs to have the ability to meet the requirements of future jobs in the digital age.
“Not only are the requirements of recruiting units for candidates higher, but the competition for a job position is now much higher than before. For example, according to our observations on VietnamWorks.vn, a job request has about 20 candidates applying, but now the number of applications can be up to 60, 3 times higher than before,” said a representative of Navigos Search in the North.
Sharing the business perspective, Ms. Mai Thuy Hang, Deputy General Director of Sun Group, explained that one of the reasons why businesses are more demanding with their employees is because end consumers are demanding more from the products and services that businesses provide.
Faced with the need to bring more value to consumers, the problem for businesses is that if they have a traditional product or service, they need to find a way to improve it to add value to customers, have a more reasonable price and provide users with a more enjoyable experience.
“To do that, the story of technology and processes is only a part, the requirements for people and personnel need to be much stricter, especially for businesses operating in the service industry. The requirements for personnel are more diverse, multi-dimensional and complex. It is not just a story of expertise, mastery of skills or knowledge, people working at all levels must have the mindset of connecting everything we have to solve the problems of customers and businesses at each time, with each group and in each geographical area” , Ms. Mai Thuy Hang added.
As an expert with 30 years of management experience at FPT's member units such as FPT Software, FPT Telecom and FPT University, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien commented that many young people today are aware that 'determining a career' is sometimes more important than going to university.
To prove his point, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien informed that many workers in some localities are unemployed, not only because of economic difficulties, but also because robots are gradually replacing workers' jobs.
“Four years ago, when I said that robots could replace workers in Vietnam, many people did not believe it. But robots that used to cost $400,000 now cost only $30,000, and they can work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year without asking for a raise. Many workers who do simple jobs, even though they are very young, have had their jobs taken away by robots,” Mr. Hoang Nam Tien shared.
Not only workers, according to the Vice President of FPT University Council, many personnel in other professions such as journalists and programmers are also at risk of being replaced and having their jobs stolen by artificial intelligence.
For journalists, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien predicts that in less than 3 years, the normal news writing of journalists will be replaced by artificial intelligence. Journalists who only write news will then have no jobs. At this time, investigation and research are important for journalists.
Similarly, in the past, an IT engineer who graduated from school only needed to be proficient in 2 languages, English (Japanese) and programming language, to be able to make a good living with an income of 20-30 million VND/month. But until now, this is no longer true. If they are only good at foreign languages and 1 programming language, IT engineers and programmers will still lose their jobs, because the command lines written in Java, C++... can now be retrieved from ChatGPT, without the need for coding.
From that reality, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien emphasized that workers need to constantly study to update and improve their qualifications. To avoid unemployment, workers need to be retrained, have to learn specialized skills, not just study in the factory for 2-3 months and then go to work like before.
Meanwhile, journalists also have to learn to improve their knowledge and skills to a new level, not just simply writing news. For IT personnel, new graduates who want to have their own position and not be replaced by artificial intelligence must learn more about Big Data, AI, Blockchain...
“Today's workers must be different and the saying 'Lifelong learning' is now a practical requirement, not at all frivolous,” Mr. Hoang Nam Tien affirmed.
