Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to exceed $1 billion in the first quarter of 2024

According to information from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), preliminary statistics from the customs sector show that in March, fruit and vegetable exports reached 433 million USD, an increase of 32.9% compared to the previous month and an increase of nearly 4% compared to the same period last year.

In total, in the first 3 months of the year, fruit and vegetable exports reached 1.25 billion USD, up 27% over the same period in 2023. This is the first time that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports have reached and exceeded 1 billion USD in the first quarter of the year.

In the first 3 months of the year, fruit and vegetable exports reached 1.25 billion USD.

Notably, in the top 10 fruit and vegetable export markets of Vietnam (updated to the end of February), Thailand has become the 4th largest fruit and vegetable import market of Vietnam. Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to Thailand increased by 125.9% compared to the same period last year, reaching 28.6 million USD, increasing Thailand's market share from 2% to nearly 4%.

5 billion-dollar export groups of the agricultural sector

According to the latest preliminary statistics of the General Department of Customs (from the beginning of 2024 to March 15),

The five billion-dollar export groups of the agricultural sector are: Wood and wood products, coffee, seafood, vegetables, and rice.

Of which, 3 new commodity groups reached a turnover of billions of dollars in the first 2.5 months of the year: coffee, vegetables and rice. Specifically, coffee exports reached a turnover of 1.574 billion USD, up 61.1% over the same period last year (equivalent to an increase of nearly 600 million USD).

Rice reached 1.06 billion USD, up 53.7% (equivalent to an increase in turnover of 370 million USD). Vegetables and fruits reached 1.03 billion USD, up 40.3% (equivalent to an increase in turnover of nearly 300 million USD).

Wood and wood products continue to be the largest export group of the agricultural sector with a turnover of 2.86 billion USD, an increase of approximately 30% (equivalent to an additional turnover of nearly 660 million USD).

Seafood reached 1.546 billion USD, up nearly 10.6% (equivalent to an additional turnover of nearly 150 million USD). Thus, the additional turnover of these 5 key product groups alone amounted to more than 2 billion USD.

Lobster exports to China increased 27 times

According to information from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, in the first two months of 2024, seafood exports increased by 13% over the same period last year, mainly due to a sudden increase of 64% in January.

Lobster exports to China increased 27 times

Many main products had positive growth, of which white-leg shrimp increased by 18%, tuna increased by 21%, tra fish increased by 6.5%, and tiger shrimp increased by 9%.

Notably, lobster exports reached nearly 30 million USD, an 18-fold increase compared to 1.6 million USD in the same period last year. Of which, green lobster exports (rock lobsters) accounted for more than 90% with 27.6 million USD, an 80-fold increase; followed by spiny lobsters reaching 2.15 million USD, an increase of 45 times compared to the same period.

China remains the largest import market for Vietnamese lobster products, with a value of nearly 29 million USD, 27 times higher than the same period last year.

Seafood exports in the first two months of 2024 reached nearly 1.21 billion USD

According to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs, seafood exports in February 2024 decreased by 38.7% compared to January 2024 and decreased by 24.7% compared to February 2023, reaching nearly 459.59 million USD. In the first two months of 2024, exports of this group of products reached nearly 1.21 billion USD, an increase of 13.5% compared to the first two months of 2023.

Seafood exports in the first two months of 2024 reached nearly 1.21 billion USD

Seafood exports to the Japanese market accounted for 16.3% of the total export turnover of this group of products nationwide, reaching over 196.9 million USD, up 5.6% compared to the first 2 months of 2023; of which February 2024 alone reached 66.63 million USD, down 48.9% compared to January 2024 and down 30.2% compared to February 2023.

Ranked second in terms of turnover is the US market, accounting for 15.6%, reaching nearly 188.59 million USD, up 22% over the same period; in February 2024 alone, exports to this market reached 77.79 million USD, down 29.9% compared to January 2024 and down 10.6% compared to February 2023.

Next, the Chinese market in February 2024 decreased by 19.4% compared to January 2024 and decreased by 20.3% compared to February 2023, reaching 81.3 million USD; in the first 2 months of 2024, exports to this market increased sharply by 43.7% compared to the first 2 months of 2023, reaching over 181.73 million USD, accounting for 15% of the total export turnover of this group of goods nationwide.

Vietnam's fertilizer exports brought in more than 145 million USD in the first two months of the year.

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the first two months of 2024, the country exported 351,962 tons of various fertilizers, equivalent to 145.42 million USD, with an average price of 413.2 USD/ton, up 26.5% in volume, up 12.8% in turnover but down 10.9% in price compared to the first two months of 2023.

Vietnam's fertilizer exports brought in more than 145 million USD in the first two months of the year.

In February 2024 alone, 171,741 tons of various fertilizers were exported, reaching 72.52 million USD, at a price of 422.3 USD/ton, down 4.7% in volume, down 0.5% in turnover but up 4.4% in price compared to January 2024; Compared to February 2023, it increased 13.7% in volume, up 11.5% in turnover but down 1.9% in price.

Exports to the Cambodian market accounted for over 19% of the total volume and total export turnover of fertilizers in the country, reaching 67,530 tons, equivalent to 27.98 million USD, with an average price of 414.3 USD/ton, up 10% in volume, but down 5.4% in turnover and down 14% in price compared to the same period in 2023. In February 2024 alone, exports to this market decreased by 21.3% in volume, down 26% in turnover and down 6% in price compared to January 2024, reaching 29,750 tons, equivalent to 11.9 million USD.

Behind the main market of Cambodia are markets such as: Korea reaching 60,720 tons, equivalent to 25.2 million USD, average price of 415 USD/ton, a sharp increase of 51.3% in volume, 63.6% in turnover and 8.1% in price, accounting for over 17% of the total volume and total export turnover of fertilizers of the whole country.

Exports to the Philippines market reached 17,894 tons, equivalent to 8.1 million USD, with an average price of 454 USD/ton, up 217% in volume and 90.9% in turnover, while prices decreased by 39.8%, accounting for over 5% of total volume and total turnover.

Exports to the Malaysian market reached 22,407 tons, equivalent to 7.4 million USD, with an average price of 330.2 USD/ton, up 12.7% in volume, up 19% in turnover, up 5.7% in price, accounting for 6.4% in total volume and 5.1% in total turnover.
