Investing in stocks with AI is booming, experts advise against 'deification'

Acknowledging that AI technology will make stock investment simpler, especially convenient for those new to the market, Mr. Nguyen Van Toai, Director of VPS Securities Company, said that this trend has been quite popular in the world in recent years.

Accordingly, AI is applied to analyze market trends, predict the increase or decrease of stock prices or give warnings about risks. Thanks to specialized algorithms for extracting information, with reports hundreds of pages long, AI can still quickly extract concise information related to the company's stock code. Thereby helping investors save time and effort to make faster decisions.

In addition, for new investors with little experience, instead of having to prepare knowledge for a long time to pour money into the market, AI will help shorten this process.

However, Mr. Toai emphasized that investors should only consider this as a reference tool. Because in essence, AI is just a measurement and evaluation tool according to a predetermined formula, while the development of the stock market also depends on the feelings and emotions of investors and can suddenly change according to human moods, which AI cannot predict.

“AI certainly cannot replace emotions, so it should be considered a statistical tool, synthesizing information similar to ChatGPT and can only support at a certain level or at a certain stage. In particular, investors should not completely trust this technology or they will fail," said Mr. Toai.

Mr. Nguyen The Minh - Director of Analysis, Yuanta Vietnam Securities Company - also said that currently many investors, even some domestic securities companies or Fintech companies, are using AI technology to advise on investment and financial management for customers.

However, in reality, there are many companies that consider this a tool for “bullshitting”. AI is just the surface, and inside, it is the SEO support team that is used, not the AI algorithm. This shows that there are still very few businesses, companies and investors in Vietnam that actually use AI technology to invest in stocks.

"Therefore, its effectiveness cannot be verified or evaluated. However, I think the trend of using AI for securities applications may continue to expand in the future," said Mr. Minh.

According to Mr. Minh, the Vietnamese stock market is still quite young, not to mention the quality of input data is generally not perfect and transparent enough like in developed countries. Meanwhile, AI relies on data, so it is completely possible to make wrong predictions if the input is not accurate.

“The data that AI provides is mainly based on past events, while the fluctuations and prospects of a business depend a lot on variables that AI cannot synthesize or does not have data to synthesize. Therefore, investors need to rely more on their own judgment, research and experience about the business. They should not rely entirely on AI or any stock expert or brokerage consultant," Mr. Minh said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dao Minh Chau, Deputy Director of Stock Analysis at the Investment Analysis Center - SSI Securities Corporation (SSI Research) also gave a recommendation: AI technology is effective in processing large volumes of work to make an investment decision. However, in my opinion, its real effectiveness in supporting the selection of investment channels has not been verified. Therefore, at this time, using AI to analyze data is more appropriate than using AI as a channel to choose investments.

Mr. Chau also advised securities companies and investors to be cautious when using AI technology as an expert to buy or sell stocks. “If you use AI as an investment consultant or “deify” this technology and trust it completely, investors will easily face many risks and risks of loss. AI cannot replace humans in any situation, especially the stock market, a market with many unpredictable fluctuations in a short time,” said Mr. Chau.
