Fate came to basketball

Born into a farming family in Hau Giang, no one in her family was into sports, but Phan Thi Hong Tuyet "accidentally" fell in love with basketball thanks to her special height.

Tuyet said that since she was a child, she had a height that was superior to her peers. Thanks to that height, in 6th grade, Tuyet was noticed by her teachers and selected to go to Saigon to try her hand at basketball. Although she did not want to leave her family, to make her parents less tired, Tuyet agreed because she thought "there I can study both culture and basketball and have a salary".

After 3 months of effort, Tuyet officially passed the testing phase to become a member of the Ho Chi Minh City youth basketball team.

Thanks to her suitable physique and diligent training spirit, in less than a year, from a girl who knew nothing about basketball, Tuyet was able to compete on the field and continuously made her mark.

Tuyet still remembers the feeling when she was first selected to join the U17 team of Ho Chi Minh City to "play" the national tournament and won the championship that year. "I felt like I was on cloud nine because the opponent was very strong. To win, my whole team and I had to practice very hard," Tuyet recalled.

Continuing the momentum, Tuyet and her teammates have won the national U19 gold medal for 3 consecutive years (2017, 2018, 2019). At the national U23 tournament, Tuyet also won silver medals in 2021, 2023 and gold medals in 2022. In addition, Tuyet has won many other awards. "I have a whole armful of medals like this," Tuyet proudly boasted.

Beautiful dream

Despite her talent, few people know that Tuyet has a dream of becoming a physical education teacher, returning to her hometown of Hau Giang to train basketball for children in remote areas while also being a professional athlete in Ho Chi Minh City.

"I grew up in a rural area and realized that sports in my hometown were not developed, so I wanted to use my knowledge to teach the children here. I don't mind traveling back and forth, but to do that, first of all, I must have a formal teaching degree," Tuyet confided.

Thinking and doing, Tuyet passed the entrance exam to the physical education department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Physical Education and Sports, taking the first step towards her dream.

"When I heard the news that I had passed the university entrance exam, I was very happy but also worried about the tuition fee. That was a large amount of money for me, and my family was in such difficult circumstances that my parents could not support my university tuition," Tuyet confided.

That's why, as soon as she heard about the Vietnam Talent Development Fund, Tuyet boldly submitted her application. The day she received the news that the Fund would sponsor her tuition for all four years of university with the amount of 72 million VND, Tuyet burst into happiness. "I didn't think I would be so lucky because there are many athletes who are more talented and have much more difficulties than me," Tuyet said excitedly.
