Perspective of Lien Chieu port project

Specifically, Lien Chieu port area will include container terminals, general terminals, bulk terminals, liquid/gas terminals, and public service and barge terminals. These terminals are expected to be able to receive ships with a capacity of up to 100,000 tons or larger when meeting technical requirements.

The estimated volume of goods passing through this port area ranges from 8.7 to 13.7 million tons. The investment scale includes from 5 to 8 new ports (equivalent to 5 - 8 wharfs) with a total wharf length from 1,380m to 2,780m; a 100m long bulk cargo wharf and three specialized buoy wharfs will be relocated in accordance with the investment progress until 2030 (excluding other ports in the area).

In particular, the container terminal is planned to include 2 to 4 terminals (equivalent to 2-4 wharves) with a total length of 750m to 1,650m, capable of receiving ships up to 100,000 tons or larger if meeting technical conditions. The two initial terminals can handle 7.5 - 11.9 million tons of cargo; the remaining two terminals will be developed depending on the demand for international container transit.

Liquid/gas terminals serving LNG and LPG storage are planned to have 1 to 2 terminals (1-2 wharves) with a total length of 250m to 750m, capable of receiving ships with a capacity of up to 100,000 tons or more, with a cargo capacity of 0.45 - 0.75 million tons/year.

The anchorage area and the transshipment buoys in this area will also be relocated in sync with the progress of investment in the container terminal at Lien Chieu wharf area.

In addition, it is planned to invest in 2 more liquid cargo terminals (including 2 wharves) with a total length of 380m, accommodating 30,000-ton ships to replace the old liquid cargo terminals when relocated, with a throughput of about 0.75 - 1.05 million tons/year.

According to the detailed planning of the system of seaports, ports, wharves, buoys, water areas and water regions for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister, Lien Chieu port area will develop from 2 to 4 ports (equivalent to 2-4 wharves). Of which, two start-up ports will meet the throughput capacity of 7.5 - 11.9 million tons, the remaining two ports will develop according to the future international container transit needs.
