Israel's relentless attacks on Lebanon on September 23 that killed at least 492 people and injured more than 1,600 others are threatening to plunge the Middle East into further chaos.

AFP news agency reported that on September 23, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barro said he had requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) this week to discuss the situation in Lebanon after Israel launched a large-scale cross-border attack on Hezbollah targets.
He also called on all parties to "avoid a major regional conflict that could have devastating consequences for everyone", especially civilians.
On the same day, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib met on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York (USA) to discuss the situation in the Middle East.
The two diplomats issued a joint statement calling on the Security Council to adopt a binding resolution demanding that Israel immediately end its military actions in the Palestinian territories and Lebanon.
The foreign ministers stressed that the only viable solution to the current Middle East crisis is to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire, end attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, as well as resolve outstanding issues between Tel Aviv and Beirut.
The two sides also called on influential countries to act decisively to prevent the conflict from escalating into a full-scale war in the region.
On the same day, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell warned that the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is at risk of becoming a full-blown conflict.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Borrell emphasized: "We are very close to a large-scale war. We are witnessing an increase in military attacks, with increasing damage and a rising number of victims."
Meanwhile, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) warned that the escalation of tensions on the Israel-Lebanon border risks causing “catastrophic” consequences in the region.
The UNIFIL statement stressed that any escalation of the current dangerous situation could have far-reaching and devastating consequences, not only for those living in the border area between Lebanon and Israel, but for the entire region.
UNIFIL also expressed deep concern for the safety of civilians in southern Lebanon and warned that attacks on civilians not only violate international law but may also constitute war crimes.
Also on September 23, the Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement warning that Israel's attacks on Lebanon marked a new phase of conflict, threatening to plunge the entire region into chaos.
Türkiye called on the international community, "especially the Security Council, to take responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, and to take necessary measures to prevent the conflict from spreading."
The conflict between Hezbollah forces in Lebanon and Israel has continued to escalate dangerously after more than 11 months, with the intensity and scale of retaliatory attacks increasing.
The Israeli military said its airstrikes on September 23 hit more than 1,300 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Lebanese government sources said Israeli airstrikes killed at least 492 people and wounded at least 1,645 others. This was the bloodiest attack since the Gaza war broke out last October.
