Quang Tri - Savannakhet join hands for border security and development

On December 10, in Savannakhet province (Laos), the annual border work meeting between Quang Tri province (Vietnam) - Savannakhet (Laos) in 2024 took place.

Attending the talks were Acting Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Head of the Steering Committee for Vietnam - Laos Border Work of Lang-thong Seng-ta-van Province, Ha Sy Dong; Deputy Governor, Head of the Steering Committee for Laos - Vietnam Border Work of Ling-thong Seng-ta-van Province, along with functional agencies and border localities of the two provinces; representatives of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Savannakhet.

Speaking at the talks, Mr. Ha Sy Dong said that peace, cooperation and development continue to be the trend and aspiration of countries and peoples around the world. Quang Tri and Savannakhet are facing many new opportunities, especially from the new wave of foreign investment in strategic transport projects of Vietnam and Laos connecting countries in the East-West Economic Corridor.

The delegations of the two provinces informed about the socio-economic situation in 2024; assessed the results of coordination in border-related work between Quang Tri province and Savannakhet province since the annual meeting between the two provinces held in January 2024 until now.

According to information at the meeting, in 2024, the functional forces managing and protecting the border of the two provinces of Quang Tri - Savannakhet will organize 1 provincial-level bilateral patrol/24 rounds, and 20 station-level bilateral patrols/480 officers and soldiers participating. The border lines and markers are guaranteed to be intact; cases of violations of border regulations, smuggling, and illegal exploitation of forest and land products have been detected and handled promptly.

The special working group of Quang Tri and Savannakhet provinces continues to coordinate closely and do a good job in collecting martyrs' graves. In the dry season of 2023 - 2024, the remains of 12 martyrs who were Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died during the war in Laos were collected. On May 25, Quang Tri province coordinated with Savannakhet province to organize a ceremony to receive the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers back to the country for burial at the National Cemetery for Martyrs of Road 9, ensuring thoughtfulness and solemnity.

Quang Tri province and Savannakhet province have discussed upgrading and expanding the road from Ta Oi district, Salavan province to Dong village, Se Pon district, Savannakhet province to meet the demand for transporting coal from Laos to Vietnam...

Based on the achieved results, the two provinces agreed to sign the 2024 annual meeting minutes between Quang Tri and Savannakhet with the main contents: Maintaining good propaganda, dissemination, education and mobilizing people in border areas to comply with legal documents on the border between Vietnam and Laos signed by the two governments.

Continue to coordinate the exchange of experiences and information sharing in military-security and border work; combat, prevent and promptly handle acts affecting the border line, border markers, violations of border regulations, illegal entry and exit and cross-border crimes.

Continue to direct departments, branches and localities to propagate and take measures to prevent illegal migration and unregistered marriages in the border areas of Quang Tri and Savannakhet provinces.

The two sides continued to direct relevant agencies to promote administrative reform, apply the "digital border gate" model to facilitate import and export activities, entry and exit of people, goods and vehicles through the Lao Bao - Densavan international border gate pair. They agreed to promote and direct local agencies to continue to effectively promote the model of village-to-village twinning on both sides of the border; encourage the organization of cultural, sports and health care exchange activities for people in border areas, exchange of experiences in agricultural production and other related contents.

On this occasion, the Vietnam - Laos Border Steering Committee of Quang Tri province awarded 100 million VND to the Laos - Vietnam Border Steering Committee of Savannakhet province.
