On June 17, the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province submitted a document to the Provincial People's Council requesting approval of a resolution to rearrange communes and towns in the province for the period 2023 - 2025.
According to the proposal, the two communes of Duc Thang and Duc Loi (Mo Duc district) will merge their natural areas and populations and change their names to Thang Loi commune; Nghia An and Nghia Phu communes (Quang Ngai city) will also merge similarly and take the new name of An Phu commune.
In addition, part of the area and population of Nghia My and Nghia Phuong communes will be merged into Song Ve town (Tu Nghia district). The remaining part of Nghia My commune will be merged into the remaining part of Nghia Phuong commune and named Nghia Phuong commune.
In theadministrative unit merger that the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province submitted, the district and commune authorities had previously consulted voters and unanimously passed resolutions at the district and commune levels.
In addition to the merger, the plan to rearrange the apparatus and civil servants is also taken into account. Redundancy cases will be resolved with policies and regimes. For headquarters and public assets, appropriate plans will be developed to ensure efficiency.
Quang Ngai has a natural area of over 5,155km2 , with 1.3 million people. Currently, the province has 13 district-level administrative units and 173 commune-level administrative units.
According to the regulations of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the arrangement of district and commune-level administrative units in the period of 2023 - 2030, in the period of 2023 - 2025, Quang Ngai has 2 district-level administrative units and 9 commune-level administrative units subject to arrangement. In the coming time, the province will study and implement to ensure conformity with the boundaries, culture and history.
One of the most concerning issues for people in merging communes and districts is choosing a new name or keeping the old name to suit the culture and history of the land.
Regarding the 4 communes merged into 2 new communes, An Phu and Thang Loi, the local people are very supportive. Many people think that the new names are good and suitable. It also reminds future generations of the past.
"Merging Duc Thang and Duc Loi communes into Thang Loi commune is very good. We support this new name. But we hope the government will consider handling simple administrative procedures, avoiding having to redo complicated paperwork, affecting people's lives," said Mr. Toan (Duc Loi commune).
