Quang Nam and the mark of reducing plastic waste in tourism

According to the Vietnam Tourism Association, the project includes three components: Communication to raise awareness about reducing plastic waste in the tourism sector; Piloting the application of solutions and initiatives to reduce plastic waste in some tourist areas and destinations in the two provinces of Quang Nam and Ninh Binh ; Developing an action plan to reduce plastic waste in the tourism industry and applying plastic waste management to tourism businesses.

The project will be implemented from January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024 with the overall goal of promoting activities to reduce plastic waste in the tourism sector. Thereby, contributing to environmental protection and tourism development to achieve the sustainable development goals of the tourism industry; at the same time contributing to the goal of sustainable economic development of the country.

In component 2, the project organized training on how to reduce plastic waste; how to raise awareness for tourists to managers and staff of some destination management boards in Quang Nam and Ninh Binh, as well as restaurants and hotels participating in the pilot.

In addition, support some products to replace single-use plastic items in restaurants and hotels with reusable products/environmentally friendly products.

The project also monitors, supervises and evaluates the implementation results and
Develop a summary report on the pilot activities of plastic waste reduction and the Criteria for recognizing plastic waste-free tourism businesses in Quang Nam and Ninh Binh...

Through a survey and measurement of the plastic waste reduction results of about 50 tourism businesses in 2 localities, it was shown that there has been a change in plastic waste reduction behavior with a reduction of 35%.

Based on the results achieved by the project in Ninh Binh and Hoi An (Quang Nam), the Vietnam Tourism Association will continue to disseminate and replicate plastic waste reduction activities to other localities across the country, focusing on green transformation in tourism business for sustainable development.

The goal of the Vietnam Tourism Association is that by 2030, all members of the association will not use non-biodegradable plastic bags and disposable plastic products.
