According to the provincial People's Committee, Chu Lai airport has an area of about 2,148.6 hectares, currently managed and used by the Ministry of National Defense. According to the plan, the eastern area will be invested in developing a new system of runways, taxiways, aprons, passenger terminals, cargo terminals... synchronously, ensuring operational standards as an independent airport.

To implement the Project on socialization of investment and exploitation of Chu Lai airport, the Provincial People's Committee requested the Ministry of National Defense to preside over and coordinate with relevant ministries, branches and localities to measure and clearly define the area of civil aviation land, military land, and shared military land (shared civil and military land) and establish records and procedures to hand over the area of civil aviation land to Quang Nam province for management.
