Enhancing added value through processing; production linkages; production according to standards and regulations; developing packaging and labels for agricultural products to contribute to brand recognition in the market; and integration with tourism and services. Through these efforts, agricultural production is transforming in a positive direction, with annual added value increasing, contributing to higher incomes and diversified livelihoods for the people.
Doong Pan tea, Lung Sau tea, Bo To brown sugar, Phuc Sen knives… are no longer unfamiliar products to the people of Cao Bang . Moreover, many products are now known and trusted by consumers in other provinces and cities. This is the result of implementing the Project on agricultural development towards improving quality, added value, specialty products and large-scale livestock farming in Quang Hoa district for the period 2020-2025.
Annually, the district issues plans for the integrated implementation of projects and programs aimed at promoting innovation, applying science and technology, enhancing value, and linking agricultural production. The focus is on intensive investment and the application of science and technology in production to improve the productivity, yield, and quality of existing cash crops; for newly introduced crops, it is essential to ensure suitability to natural conditions and market potential. Some newly implemented crops include: black jelly (20.6 hectares, with an average yield of 60 quintals/hectare and a production of 120 tons); watermelon (39.1 hectares, with a yield of 300 quintals/hectare and a production of 1,173 tons); and newly planted tea (13.4 hectares, bringing the total tea area in the district to 40 hectares). Additionally, 105 hectares of various fruit trees such as seedless persimmons, jackfruit, and green pomelo have been newly planted, bringing the total existing fruit tree area to over 504.3 hectares. In coordination with relevant agencies, research projects are implemented, starting with pilot models and evaluating their effectiveness before scaling up. These include projects such as: “Research on the conservation and development of the genetic resources of the Mac Pup tree in Cao Bang”; “Application of science and technology to build a model for the development of the medicinal plant Cat Sam”; and “Linking production development along the value chain for the cane sugar product of Quang Hoa district, Cao Bang province”. The District Agricultural Service Center regularly provides training and technology transfer to local people; and implements demonstration and pilot models.
Currently, the district has 6 crops that are processed and pre-processed: sugarcane, tobacco, tea, radish, black jelly, and the "trau co" plant (Mac Pup), which help to increase the value of agricultural products. The total area of crops participating in the value chain is 3,528 hectares, accounting for 27% of agricultural production land (sugarcane 2,504 ha, tobacco 250 ha, cassava 623 ha, ginger 109 ha, and bamboo for leaf harvesting 28 ha...). Focus is placed on implementing the "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program, considering it an important task to build the district's brand, while also contributing to producers adhering to standards and regulations; emphasizing brand building, promoting and introducing products to consumers, creating consumer trust and boosting production development. Currently, the entire district has 32 OCOP products that have achieved 3 stars. Five agricultural products have achieved VietGAP standards (Bac Hong green vegetables, Quang Hung tangerines, Quoc Tuan chayote, Quoc Dan radish, and wild spinach), and over 20 types of agricultural products have developed their own packaging, labels, trademarks, and brand identities.
To date, there are 19 agricultural enterprises and cooperatives in the area, of which 13 cooperatives were established between 2020 and 2024. The province has promoted production linkages tailored to the capabilities and farming practices of the majority of farmers, with 14 enterprises and cooperatives participating in linkages and investing in agriculture (3 tobacco enterprises, 2 sugarcane enterprises, 2 cassava enterprises, 1 chili enterprise, 2 ginger cooperatives; 2 buffalo and cattle production chains...). 230 agricultural production community groups (crop cultivation and livestock farming) have been established to implement national target programs.
With synchronized solutions, agricultural production in the district has achieved positive results. The value of the agricultural sector in 2024 reached over 1,032 billion VND, an increase of 3.17% compared to 2023; the value of agricultural production was 60.2 million VND/hectare. The district continues to promote awareness campaigns to improve people's understanding of agricultural production, focusing on quality and added value, creating a shift in perception and action, changing mindsets in agricultural production, moving from extensive to intensive development, production according to standards, based on scientific and technological advancements to improve quality, added value, and sustainable development. The district also promotes the development of collective economic models, encouraging the establishment of agricultural cooperatives, cooperative groups, and interest groups. Furthermore, it is developing several agricultural production models linked to tourism and services. Strengthen the mobilization of capital to enhance resources for implementing mechanisms and policies for investment in agriculture and rural areas. Review the potential and strengths of the district's products, develop implementation plans; guide businesses in completing OCOP product dossiers.
