Vietnam-New Zealand Strategic Partnership Growing

NDO - At the meeting between President Luong Cuong and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on the afternoon of November 15 (local time), on the occasion of attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2024 Summit Week in Lima (Peru), the two leaders were pleased to see that the Vietnam-New Zealand Strategic Partnership is increasingly developing deeply and effectively, towards the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations and 5 years of Strategic Partnership in 2025.


At the meeting, President Luong Cuong affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to and wishes to develop the Strategic Partnership with New Zealand. President Luong Cuong thanked the New Zealand Government for providing a relief package worth NZ$1 million to help Vietnam overcome the consequences of Typhoon Yagi.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon affirmed that the recent high-level contacts and exchanges have helped increase political trust and open up new cooperation opportunities; he proposed that the two sides expand cooperation to areas such as climate change response, green economy, digital economy, high-tech agriculture, etc.

Emphasizing that Vietnam is New Zealand's priority partner in the region, Prime Minister Luxon also proposed that the two sides actively coordinate and set out a roadmap to consider raising the relationship to a new level in the coming time.

The two sides also agreed to promote economic cooperation, aiming for the 3 billion USD mark by 2026 and set bigger goals for the next stage; agreed to increase the exchange of views, positions and coordination at important multilateral forums such as ASEAN, United Nations, APEC mechanisms, etc.; actively consider supporting each other's candidacies at important international forums and organizations; and promote cooperation on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the two sides emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, and resolving disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

On this occasion, President Luong Cuong affirmed that Vietnam welcomes the visit to Vietnam by the New Zealand Prime Minister at an appropriate time at the invitation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
