On March 29, the Sudanese army said it had taken control of a large market in the city of Omdurman - a sister city of Khartoum, which was previously used by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as a base to launch attacks during the brutal two-year civil war.

In a statement, the army said its forces now control the Libyan Souq in western Omdurman, seizing weapons and equipment left behind by the RSF as they fled. The Libyan Souq is one of the largest and most important commercial centres in Sudan.
The announcement comes days after the Sudanese army declared victory over the RSF in Khartoum, claiming control of most of the capital.
The conflict between the army and the RSF has sparked waves of ethnic violence, creating what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis, and pushing many areas into famine.
The Sudanese army previously controlled much of Omdurman, where two major military bases are located. It appears determined to seize control of the entire capital region, which includes the three cities of Khartoum, Omdurman and Bahri, divided by branches of the Nile.
On the same day, the US Embassy in Syria warned American citizens of the "increased possibility" of attacks during the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The notice posted on the embassy's website on the evening of March 28 said: "The US Department of State warns US citizens of the possibility of increased attacks during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, which may target embassies, international organizations, and Syrian government agencies in Damascus."
"Methods of attack may include... lone attackers, armed gunmen, or the use of explosive devices," the statement added, without elaborating on specific threats or potential perpetrators.
According to the notice, Washington advised its citizens not to travel to Syria "due to significant risks of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, hostage-taking, armed conflict, and unjust detention."
Eid al-Fitr is expected to begin in the coming days, but the exact timing will be determined based on the sighting of the crescent moon, according to the Islamic calendar.
