Earlier this year, the US military deployed this medium-range missile system in the northern Philippines as part of annual joint exercises with Manila.
Washington then decided to deploy the system in the Philippines, despite Beijing's criticism that the move would destabilize the Asian region. Since then, Philippine forces have used the system for operational training.
Speaking at a press conference, Lieutenant General Roy Galido, Commander of the Philippine Army, emphasized: "We plan to buy this system because we see its feasibility and functionality as suitable for our archipelago defense model." He noted that the number of missile systems that Manila will buy will depend on "economic factors".
Lieutenant General Galido added that according to regulations, the Philippine military needs at least two years or more to acquire a new weapon system from the planning stage.
