From Long An, I drove a motorbike for more than an hour to take pictures of a coffee shop in the West (By: Cam Tien).
Early in the morning, Ni Coffee Shop on Nguyen Dinh Chinh Street is already crowded with customers enjoying coffee. The main space of the shop is a 3-room tiled-roof wooden house, with a garden in front of the door, recreating the scene of the West many years ago, making many people excited.
The spacious yard is green with squash trellis, along with neatly planted vegetable and rice beds, bringing a peaceful feeling of the countryside.
This coffee shop has been open for just over a month, and is the brainchild of young people, hoping to create a Western space where people can gather and reminisce about old stories.
Mr. Thanh An – the person in charge of the restaurant’s communications – said that the 3-room tiled house was completely built on a vacant lot. The owner of the restaurant personally consulted the space of old Western houses to come up with decoration ideas. In particular, the owner spent 6 months looking for old items to arrange in the restaurant.
“The tables and chairs, the charcoal iron, the wood stove, and the cupboards are things that remind many people of their childhood in the West. Some of them are many years old, and some of them were made by the shop owner and asked the craftsman to make them look like old items,” An shared.
Family photos posted on the wooden wall are the way people in the West in the past kept memories. According to Mr. Thanh An, the above pictures are all old photos of the restaurant owner's relatives.
Mr. Vinh Khang (Dong Thap) - a guest who arrived early in the morning - said that the unique features of an old Western house at the restaurant reminded him of his childhood in his hometown.
“The old desk, the certificates of merit, the handwritten timetable, and the wooden chairs remind me of my school days. In addition, the place that makes me most nostalgic is the kitchen with the wood stoves, pot holders, baskets, etc. commonly found in the old West. Nowadays, kitchens are rarely like that,” Mr. Khang commented.
This was Mr. Khang’s first time at the shop, and he thought it was an interesting place to meet friends and reminisce. However, he also commented that the coffee at the shop was a bit sweet, with a modern flavor, unlike the old coffee.
“In addition, if the shop changed the new style cups to the old-fashioned ones and did not use straws, it would be more like the West,” said Mr. Khang.
At the end of the year, this coffee shop also arranges apricot and peach branches to create a spring atmosphere, creating a space for young people to take souvenir photos in ao dai.
The shop is currently open 24/7, selling basic drinks, with prices ranging from 39,000 VND to 65,000 VND. Every Saturday, the shop also has exciting art activities such as amateur music, bingo, etc.
Ms. Diem Thy (in Long An) really liked it when she saw the image of the restaurant on social networks, so she decided to wake up early with her friends and travel more than 1 hour to get here.
“My friends and I set off at 6am. When we got to the shop, we put on makeup, did our hair, changed into Ao Dai and took photos of each other. The shop was spacious, airy, and had many beautiful photo angles. We went a bit far, but it was worth it to bring back many beautiful photos,” Thy shared.
