The shift from inefficient crop cultivation to fruit tree farming not only increases people's income but also contributes to the socio -economic development of a remote commune like Nam Ninh (Cat Tien district).

Crop conversion models to durian cultivation in Nam Ninh commune have yielded high economic efficiency.
Crop conversion models to durian cultivation in Nam Ninh commune have yielded high economic efficiency.

Returning to Nam Ninh commune these days, what impressed us most were the spacious tiled-roof houses nestled amidst lush, fruit-laden durian orchards. Thanks to the successful restructuring of crop cultivation, the economic landscape of Nam Ninh commune has taken on a brighter hue with many significant changes.

Following the officials of the Nam Ninh Commune Farmers' Association, we visited the model durian orchard of Mr. Dang Van Tuan's family in My Bac village, Nam Ninh commune, covering about 1 hectare. At this time, his family is busy with the final stages of care before selling to traders. Mr. Tuan said that this year, durian is being officially exported to China, so it is fetching a high price. In addition, his durian orchard is part of a cooperative and is located within a certified growing area code, so traders are competing to buy from him very early on. He expects his durian orchard to bring in over 500 million VND in income for his family this year.

Mr. Tuan shared that Nanning is a predominantly agricultural area, where the lives of the people mainly depend on rice cultivation, cashew trees, and household-scale livestock farming. Although the vast majority of households here have large areas of cultivated land, because most of the land is hilly and mountainous, and previously only used for monoculture cashew farming, the economic efficiency was very low. He noticed that compared to areas with similar natural conditions such as Da Huoai and Da Teh, the people here have successfully switched to growing various fruit trees. Therefore, after a period of research and learning from experience, in 2017, Mr. Tuan decided to remove 1 hectare of cashew trees and use excavators to renovate the orchard; at the same time, he dug a pond to store water for irrigation.

On his 1-hectare plot, Mr. Tuan planted over 200 durian trees, mainly Ri6 and Dona varieties. Thanks to the effective application of scientific and technical guidance, Mr. Tuan's durian orchard is thriving. In 2022 alone, despite the first harvest, he achieved a total income of over 300 million VND. Currently, Mr. Tuan's durian orchard has been recognized by the Cat Tien District People's Committee as a model orchard; it has been assigned a single planting area code to facilitate traceability for export.

Mr. Pham Van Binh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Ninh commune, shared that Nam Ninh has a rather complex topography with interspersed low hills and mountains. Given this reality, the commune's Party committee and government have studied and based their findings on natural conditions, climate, and soil to identify key crops; among them, fruit trees such as durian and pomelo are a suitable direction. From there, the locality has intensified propaganda and mobilization efforts to encourage people to convert inefficient agricultural land to the production of these crops. Furthermore, since 2020, the Party committee and government of Nam Ninh commune have adopted a policy of restructuring crop patterns and included this content in the Resolution of the Commune Party Congress for the 2020-2025 term. To date, restructuring crop patterns has become a strong development movement in the commune.

From 2022 to the present, Nam Ninh commune has a total cashew tree area of 1,071 hectares, a decrease of 115 hectares. This area has been converted by local people to other crops such as durian (41 hectares, bringing the total durian area to 60.15 hectares); oranges, tangerines, pomelos, mangoes, jackfruit, and star apples (4.2 hectares, bringing the total area to 14.55 hectares); rubber (17 hectares, bringing the total area to 19.3 hectares); forestry trees (21.15 hectares - oil palm, teak, rosewood, sandalwood); raw material trees (bamboo) (10.3 hectares); and acacia (18.35 hectares, bringing the total area to 91.89 hectares). Regarding durian cultivation, Nam Ninh commune has established and been granted 6 planting area codes.

The effectiveness of crop restructuring has helped many households in Nam Ninh commune increase their income and improve their lives. According to the review results, it is projected that by the end of June 2023, the poverty rate in the commune will decrease to 4.42%; of which, the poverty rate among ethnic minority households will be 5.88%. In the coming time, the People's Committee of Nam Ninh commune will continue to direct the people to strengthen field and garden inspections to proactively disseminate information and recommend measures to prevent and control pests and diseases on crops and livestock, apply advanced techniques to production; focus on commodity agricultural production associated with the application of science and technology, and gradually form linkages and chains in the production and consumption of agricultural products. At the same time, we are stepping up propaganda and mobilization efforts to encourage people to change the structure of crops and livestock, restructure agriculture, adapt to climate change, improve household gardens and mixed gardens, and convert inefficient cashew hills into grafted cashew trees and other high-economic-value crops, Mr. Binh added.
