Not just sports but also classroom
Football is not only a sport but also a driving force that awakens aspirations, strong inner strength to stand up after failure and a message about gender equality. That was the message of Norwegian Deputy Ambassador Mette Møglestue during her working trip to Cao Bang province to attend the Launching Ceremony of the "Community Football in Vietnam" (FFAV) Project of the Norwegian Football Federation.
Attending the FFAV launch event series in Cao Bang were representatives of the Department of Education and Training; Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism; and Department of Planning and Investment of Cao Bang province; representatives of the Department of Teachers and Education Managers; UNESCO and relevant local agencies.
Norwegian Deputy Ambassador Mette Møglestue: When you lace up your shoes and step onto the pitch, you are not just chasing a ball, you are chasing a dream, developing your character and learning about teamwork, discipline, resilience, celebrating diversity and learning to bounce back from failure to move forward. |
In particular, there were 72 teachers representing 18 Primary and Secondary Schools from 4 districts in the province, who had just completed 2 training courses on "Community Football Coach" and "Life Skills Education", along with nearly 100 students gathered in this very special football event of Cao Bang province.
Mr. Ngoc Van Chan, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Cao Bang province, the project host, said that FFAV, implemented in Cao Bang, aims to develop an equal, non-competitive playing field and use football as a tool to integrate life skills education for children.
Furthermore, the Project also aims to educate life skills for girls, through the establishment and development of grassroots Football Clubs in schools, thereby effectively implementing physical education and sports in schools, developing football training movements, replicating youth football models in localities, actively contributing to the building and training of the young generation, reducing social evils...
Expressing his delight at the expansion of the FFAV Project, Norwegian Deputy Ambassador Møglestue shared that Norwegians are also passionate football fans like Vietnamese people. Norwegian children also play football from a young age.
According to her, for children, football is not just a sport, the football field is also a classroom. When they lace up their shoes and step onto the field, they are not just chasing a ball, but pursuing a dream, developing their character and learning about teamwork, discipline, resilience, celebrating diversity and learning how to get up from failure to move on. These are the skills that will accompany them as they grow up.
“More importantly, FFAV also helps to change the perception of football. It is not just a men's sport, but girls and women can pursue their football dreams. Promoting gender equality has always been a priority for Norway,” added Ms. Moglestue.

The model is replicated, the message is spread.
According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Phuong, Head of Project Office, Cao Bang is one of the first four northern provinces of Vietnam to participate in this project.
Starting in 2001, from the initial model in Thua Thien Hue province, after being selected by the Ministry of Education and Training and the Vietnam Football Federation to expand nationwide based on the "Football Development Strategy to 2020, vision 2030 of Vietnam" in 2015, the FFAV model has now been expanded to over 15 provinces and cities in Vietnam.
The project not only creates a non-competitive soccer playground for children but also contributes to training and improving life skills, building a friendly and positive school, reducing the dropout rate...
The main activities of the Project in Cao Bang include professional training for teachers of schools, organizing community football clubs at schools; maintaining the quantity and quality of football training activities and regular life skills education activities at football clubs; increasing the participation of students in the spirit of respect and equality, especially encouraging female students, disadvantaged groups, and ethnic minority students to participate.
On behalf of the Department of Education and Training of Cao Bang province, Ms. Dam Thi Trung Thu, Deputy Director emphasized: “In the context of many difficulties, Cao Bang receiving support from the Norwegian Football Federation to implement the project is very practical; timely support for the Cao Bang Education sector to partially resolve difficulties in physical education and school sports; create premises and foundations for schools to continue researching and promoting; build other sports club models, thereby improving the quality and effectiveness of this work in schools; actively contributing to the comprehensive education of students, building and training the young generation, and minimizing social evils”.
The representative of the Norwegian Embassy also hopes that FFAV will continue to expand and will contribute, together with relevant agencies, schools and the whole society, to nurturing the passion for football of Vietnamese children, especially those in difficult circumstances, thereby contributing to nurturing generations of leaders, players and resilient citizens of the future.
