On March 5, information from An Sinh Hospital (HCMC) said that it had just successfully applied a new surgical method to a patient with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Accordingly, patient TTP (37 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) fell while playing badminton. After the fall, his knee was swollen, painful, and had difficulty walking. The patient went to the Musculoskeletal - Sports Medicine Unit of An Sinh Hospital for examination.

After examination and MRI scan, the doctor concluded that the patient had torn the anterior cruciate ligament and needed reconstructive surgery. However, surgery required treatment to reduce swelling and pain in the patient's knee. After 2 weeks of treatment, the doctor decided to perform surgery on March 3.

The surgical team included doctors from An Sinh Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City Sports Medicine Association and the Department of Sports Medicine, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine. The doctors consulted and decided to perform surgery on the patient using a new technique. That is arthroscopic surgery to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament, by combining the patient's own tendon and artificial materials, integrating the advantages of traditional grafts with modern materials and technology.

12 hours after surgery, the patient is monitored and given passive rehabilitation in bed. After 24 hours, the patient can practice walking with crutches and other light exercises according to a separate program. After 48 hours, the patient is stable, the knee is no longer painful or swollen and is instructed to exercise at home, discharged from the hospital, then returned for a follow-up appointment.

It is known that this is a new method performed for the first time. This technique helps shorten the patient's recovery time, reduce complications at the tendon harvesting site, and provide optimal physiological function and safety. This is a technique expected to be a new step forward in the field of ligament reconstruction, especially in cases of sports injuries.
