(Dan Tri) - With the desire to use knowledge about AI to create useful values for society, Mr. Nguyen Viet Chung - CEO of VietPlatform and his classmates in the Master of Software Engineering (MSE) program at FSB have implemented the Memory Domain project.
Using AI technology, the team has restored hundreds of photos to give back to the families of martyrs.
The Memory Domain project was conceived after Nguyen Viet Chung and his fellow students Hoang Tuan Dat, Pham Trung Kien, Nguyen Van Tuan and Pham Minh Hieu completed courses on artificial intelligence, image and data processing. Not only stopping at the level of course reports, the group decided to develop the idea into a non-profit project with the goal of using AI to restore old or damaged photos of martyrs, helping families of martyrs have clearer images of their loved ones.
Mr. Chung said that the previous projects to restore photos of martyrs that he participated in mainly used photo processing software to redraw from old photos, which took a lot of time and depended largely on the skill of the person processing them. There were photos that lost many details or martyrs whose photos no longer existed, so there was almost no way to process them. However, with AI, the project can complete a photo in just a few minutes with better quality.
"With current AI techniques, we can program to restore a photo in just a few minutes, resulting in sharp, realistic, deep, and consistent quality images. In cases where there are no portraits, we can use photos of relatives or descriptions from teammates to restore," Chung shared.
Taking advantage of the great relationship in the network of students and alumni of the MSE program, Mr. Chung and his colleagues connected resources to jointly implement the project. The project received professional advice from Dr. Bui Van Hieu and the team of lecturers at the FSB Institute of Management & Technology, along with technical support from MSE alumni. VietPlatform Company sponsored the server infrastructure and operating costs. Organizations such as the Vinh Phuc Association (Vinh Phuc Provincial Youth Union) and other mass organizations supported connecting the families of martyrs.
After one month of implementation, the Memory Land project has received requests from 120 families of martyrs, successfully restored, printed and delivered photos to 85 families. The project continues to receive new requests via the website mienkyuc.vn and supports free restoration of all martyr photos in Vietnam. The project is also ready to connect with organizations, unions, and Departments of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of provinces and cities to deploy on a large scale and in large numbers.
Mr. Hoang Trung That (younger brother of martyr Hoang Trung Man) shared during the photo reception from the project: "My brother died in 1974 on the Southern battlefield. It was only later that the family found his remains and brought them back to his hometown. The family had a portrait to worship, but it had faded and lost details due to time. By chance, we learned about the project and contacted him. Now we have received a restored photo that is very similar, beautiful and soulful. The family is truly moved."
According to Dr. Doan Xuan Huy Minh, Director of the Master of Software Engineering (MSE) program, with the goal of training information technology masters capable of creating highly applicable technology products, MSE program students are guided to carry out specific projects that are directly related to the practical needs of society.
"Projects that are valuable and meaningful to the community like Memory Land are always encouraged and supported by the school, not only to improve students' capacity but also to make practical contributions to society," Mr. Minh emphasized.
