Bamboo Legend project in Phu Quoc United Center complex has just won the Hotel category of the 2024 IAA International Architecture Awards - one of the oldest and most prestigious architecture awards in the world.

The IAA (The International Architecture Awards) – organized by the Chicago Museum of Architecture and Design (USA) in collaboration with the European Center for Urban Architecture and Art and the Metropolitan Arts Press, Ltd. – is among the oldest and most prestigious international architecture awards in the world, becoming the standard of architectural achievement that architects and designers around the world strive for.
VTN Architects, the representative unit submitting the application for the IAA Awards, said that in 2024, with a record number of applications, the international jury of famous designers and architects selected 190 out of 850 shortlisted projects. After many rounds of evaluation, 9 projects worldwide were finally honored in the Hotel category, including Bamboo Legend.
Bamboo Legend is a rare project in Vietnam and the whole Southeast Asia region to be honored, on par with the design peaks from the US, Canada, Japan, Norway, China, and UAE.
IAA experts commented: “Bamboo Legend has become the symbol of the entire project and attracted a large number of tourists to Phu Quoc United Center. With a construction area of 1,460 m², the architects have created a unique bamboo structure that represents Vietnamese cultural characteristics.”
Under the talented hands of architect Vo Trong Nghia - one of the two leading bamboo architects in the world, Bamboo Legend is an extremely precise and elaborate arrangement of 42,000 Tay Ninh bamboo trees, creating images of unique national cultural symbols. The project is nearly 15m high, with an area of up to 700m², along with the adjacent ancient citadel architecture "Quintessence of Vietnam" of 11,200m², forming a series of unique and impressive Vietnamese cultural symbols right at the front of the Phu Quoc United Center super complex, bringing the beauty of national identity closer to domestic and international tourists.
The project is also highly appreciated for its unprecedented difficulty and construction method when the entire structure does not use nails, screws or steel to connect the bamboo trunks together. Instead, the bamboo trees are connected by 30-40 cm long pins through the trunk. "The architects have completed the "work" according to advanced construction standards and processes with almost maximum precision" - IAA assessed the project, which is a symbol of tourism on the Pearl Island.

The director of a travel agency in Ho Chi Minh City said that many domestic and international tourist groups are curious and want to come to Phu Quoc to see Bamboo Legend with their own eyes. Stepping inside, visitors will be amazed by the "symphony" of three typical traditional cultural symbols of the Vietnamese people: bronze drum, lotus and bamboo, which are "sculpted" in extremely sophisticated and elaborate negatives, creating an overwhelming visual effect.
Architect Vo Trong Nghia, the “father” of Bamboo Works, once shared: “If we can create a work that is suitable for the land and people, we will have an identity. And if that work can be brought to the world, we will have introduced our Vietnamese identity to friends across the continent.”
