"So bored, but still try"

On August 21, Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology (HUFLIT) welcomed many students from all over the world to complete admission procedures. According to actual records, in addition to bringing necessary documents and records as required by the school, some parents and new students also brought suitcases and bags to store personal belongings because the journey from home to school was too far, hundreds of kilometers.

Since 5pm the previous day, Ms. Phuong, the parent of new student Tuyet Trinh, said she had prepared her belongings to go from Ca Mau to Ho Chi Minh City. The mother and daughter "arrived" at midnight, choosing to stay at a relative's house to go to school the next morning. "I am very sad and worried that my child will go to school far from home, but I am also happy because I can send her to the city to study and become successful. And it's not just me, many other parents also send their children from the province to study," Ms. Phuong confided.

According to the female parent, she is worried about the cost of sending her child to study for 4 years at university, but she is most concerned about the fact that her child is far from home so she cannot take care of him, while "things in the city are more complicated than in the countryside". "After completing the procedures, the mother and child take the bus back to Ca Mau, and when the school announces the school, they will bring the child back. Traveling 7-8 hours is also tiring, it is very hard but I have to try, what can I do", Ms. Phuong confided.

Freshman Thuy Uyen's family "carried" from Soc Trang to Ho Chi Minh City to take their daughter to school.

Taking her child from Soc Trang to Ho Chi Minh City to enroll in school, Ms. Diem Thuy, the parent of new student Thuy Uyen, said she had been driving to school since 4:30 a.m. "When I got to school and saw the bustling atmosphere, I was happy to take my child to school. But to be honest, the tuition, accommodation, living expenses... are a bit heavy so I'm worried, not to mention that my child is a bit silly and slow so I don't know if he can live alone," Ms. Thuy confided.

Ms. Mai Xuan, from Phu Yen, traveled more than 500km to take her daughter Mai Suong to university to "find knowledge". The mother and daughter left the night before, spent about 15 minutes completing the admission procedures and are expected to return to their hometown this morning, preparing to return to school on September 11 to attend the civic activity. "Seeing my child pass the university entrance exam makes my whole family very happy," Ms. Xuan said excitedly.

Parents and children learn about admission procedures

Gia Han, a new student majoring in English, added that the application process includes filling out information, exchanging and listening to advice, then taking a photo and receiving gifts from the school before being able to go home, everything takes about 15 minutes. Although she just arrived in Ho Chi Minh City from Khanh Hoa yesterday morning, Gia Han will also return to her hometown this morning and prepare her luggage in advance to start school in mid-September.

Advice from the experts

Sharing in the online consultation program organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper on the afternoon of August 20 with the topic "Is there still a chance to consider additional admission?", Master Truong Quang Tri, Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, commented that the common mentality of parents in the province when bringing their children to enroll at the school is that they all have the view of bringing clothes, suitcases, pots, pans, electric stoves..., "even bringing a lot".

"We do not need to do that because after enrollment, the school needs time to arrange the students' study schedule as well as their civic activities. During that time, we have time to prepare these items," Master Tri noted.

Senior students of the school advise new students

Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Vice Principal of Duy Tan University, advised new students who did not enroll in their hometown to arrive early to settle down, especially in a large city like Ho Chi Minh City. "When you arrive at the university, the first thing you should do is find out where the bookstore is, where the bus stop is, and how to get to the school's facilities (if any). Don't be passive before starting the new school year," Mr. Hai advised.
