At this time, junior high school seniors are anxious, rushing to complete their programs, and reviewing for the competitive 10th grade entrance exam. Although there are many options after junior high school, not all students understand clearly enough to choose the right path.
Take the initiative to learn more
In the 2024-2025 school year, the entire city of Hanoi will have about 127,000 students taking the junior high school graduation exam. The expected number of students admitted to grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year is as follows: Admission to public high schools is about 79,000 students (accounting for about 62%), admission to private high schools, vocational education centers (GDNN) - continuing education, vocational education institutions is about 48,000 students. Although the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has been implementing many solutions to ensure enough places for students, meeting the learning aspirations of 100% of junior high school graduates, the general mentality of parents is to want their children to pass the 10th grade entrance exam to a public high school to have a good learning environment, free tuition... Therefore, in general, the race to get a place in grade 10 this year for Hanoi students is still very fierce.
Another concern for 9th graders is that the first year of the 10th grade exam is organized according to the 2018 General Education Program, leading to changes in the orientation of the exam questions, structure, and content of the exam. Although the third exam subject this year was announced by localities earlier than the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) before March 31, the exam review is not less stressful because according to the regulations of Circular 29, extra tutoring with fees in schools will not take place. Each week, each exam subject will be reviewed by the school for 2 free periods, while in previous years, the review period was very active with a duration 3-4 times longer. Most students voluntarily register to review the subjects they will take for the 10th grade entrance exam in extra classes organized by the school and the teachers are usually the main teachers in their classrooms. Parents are willing to pay tuition for their children to take extra exam preparation classes, and in fact, this amount is very reasonable compared to registering for exam preparation classes at centers.
This was also the concern raised by a student from Nam Tu Liem Secondary School (Hanoi) at the 10th Grade Confidence Day, held at the end of February. This student expressed his concern that he was a senior and needed to study more to confidently pass the 10th grade entrance exam.
Responding to this issue, the representative of the Ministry of Education and Training advised students that confidence will not come from going to extra classes but actually from how they study extra. Extra classes are proactive self-study, self-review, and self-supplementation of knowledge. If you do not understand or are not clear, you can ask your teachers to explain. First of all, you should do all the exercises, answer the questions in the textbook and summarize how many lessons are similar and how many are different to have a suitable review plan for yourself.
Deputy Head of the Secondary Education Department (Hanoi Department of Education and Training) Tran Dang Nghia also suggested that 9th graders should proactively solve the assigned exercises, then ask their teachers if they have done it correctly, what needs to be added, and ask for further guidance to solve the exercises more effectively.
Arrange your wishes accordingly
Hanoi currently has many types of schools for junior high school graduates to choose from, including public and private schools, vocational education and training centers, vocational training facilities, colleges, etc. Of which, the 9+ system is of interest to students and parents thanks to its short study time, graduation with a high school diploma and vocational training, making it easy to enter the labor market or transfer to higher education.
Mr. Tran The Cuong - Director of Hanoi Department of Education and Training also emphasized that if students do not meet the requirements to apply to grade 10 of public schools or depending on their circumstances, interests, and abilities, they can apply to other types of schools.
Currently, many private high schools have announced their enrollment orientation for the 2025-2026 school year for students and parents to refer to. The new point is that this year students register for admission online, without having to come to school and line up early like previous years.
This year, the admission score for grade 10 is no longer multiplied by a factor of 2 for Math and Literature as before. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training noted that the admission score is the total score of all exams, calculated on a scale of 10. Therefore, candidates need to pay attention to studying all 3 subjects carefully, not letting any subject drag down their total admission score.
To increase the chance of passing, candidates need to consider when choosing their wishes, wishes 1 and 2 should not be in the same group of schools. That is, the two schools should not have the same standard score and the number of applications. If the two schools are equal, failing the first wish will make it difficult to pass the second wish, because the admission score for the second wish must be at least 1 point higher than the standard score for the first wish. Therefore, it is necessary to choose a wish with a reasonable difference in standard score to avoid failing both.
