In an interview with The Wall Street Journal on February 13, US Vice President VP Vance threatened to use sanctions and even military options to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate with Ukraine.
US Vice President JD Vance will attend the Munich Security Conference on February 14 in Germany.
The US vice president warned that Washington could impose sanctions on Moscow and leave open the possibility of military action if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a deal for Kyiv to end the long-standing conflict.
“There are economic tools of leverage, and of course there are military tools” that the US can use against President Putin’s government.
A day earlier, US President Donald Trump said he had discussed the war in Ukraine with his counterpart Putin and then with his counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky of the Ukrainian government. The White House owner directed his officials to begin negotiations to end the war that has lasted nearly 3 years.
The calls came shortly after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Ukraine’s military allies in Brussels that a return to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders was unrealistic, and that Washington did not see the country’s admission to NATO as part of a solution to end the fighting.
On February 13, President Trump also assured Ukraine that it would always have a seat at any negotiating table with Russia, and said that US and Russian officials would meet on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (Germany) taking place on February 14 (local time).
However, the Ukrainian government said it was still too early to dialogue with Russia as proposed by the US at the conference, according to Reuters on February 14.
Regarding the possibility of peace talks, Vice President Vance said that "the agreement reached will shock many people," according to The Wall Street Journal .
Mr. Vance also admitted that President Trump could change his mind depending on how negotiations progress.
