Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang meets with President of Sri Lanka and Speaker of the House of Representatives of Japan

On May 26, within the framework of his working visit to Japan and attendance at the Future of Asia Conference, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang had meetings with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Speaker of the Japanese House of Representatives Hosoda Hiroyuki.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang also met with three co-chairs of the Vietnam-Japan Economic Cooperation Committee of the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations (KEIDANREN), including Mr. Ichikawa Hideo, Senior Advisor of Resonac Corporation; Mr. Hyodo Masayuki, General Director of Sumitomo Shoji Corporation; Mr. Fujimoto Masayoshi, General Director of Sojitz Corporation.

At the meeting with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang affirmed Vietnam's consistent policy of always attaching importance to developing the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Sri Lanka, wishing to develop the bilateral relationship more effectively and substantially on the basis of each side's potential and advantages, meeting the practical interests of the people of each country, making valuable contributions to solving global issues, and contributing to maintaining a peaceful, stable and cooperative environment in the region.

The Deputy Prime Minister suggested that the two sides promote cooperation in many fields, including increasing the exchange of high-level delegations and people-to-people exchanges; effectively implementing existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms, especially the Joint Committee chaired by the Foreign Ministers of the two countries; and signing cooperation documents in the fields of education, culture, and agriculture.

The Deputy Prime Minister proposed promoting trade cooperation, striving to restore growth momentum in 2021 and soon bringing the total two-way trade turnover to 500 million USD; expanding cooperation in other potential fields; studying the opening of direct flights to attract tourism; continuing to closely coordinate at regional and international forums, especially at the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement.

Sharing many good impressions of his visit to Vietnam as Prime Minister, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe affirmed his support for further development of Vietnam-Sri Lanka relations; expressed his wish that the two countries promote cooperation in the fields of economics, trade, investment, culture and tourism, coordinate in responding to climate change, and at the same time, strengthen coordination in multilateral mechanisms.

The President of Sri Lanka also shared the efforts and policies that Sri Lanka has implemented to quickly overcome the current domestic economic difficulties, quickly stabilize and restructure the economy. In the process, Sri Lanka wishes to promote economic cooperation with ASEAN, including Vietnam, and participate in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

At the meeting, the two sides also shared views on many international and regional issues of mutual concern.

Meeting with Speaker of the Japanese House of Representatives Hosoda Hiroyuki, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed his delight at the strong, substantive and effective development of the Vietnam-Japan Extensive Strategic Partnership; and asked the House of Representatives and Speaker Hosoda personally to continue to pay attention and promote the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries to new heights in the coming time.

On this occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister also proposed that the Japanese House of Representatives increase the exchange of delegations at all levels, young parliamentarians, and female parliamentarians of the two countries, and convey the invitation of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue to visit Vietnam in 2023 to Chairman Hosoda.

Emphasizing the importance of economic cooperation, the Deputy Prime Minister asked Japan to support the enhancement of connectivity between the two economies, helping Vietnam effectively participate in new supply chains; support the implementation of the new generation ODA program for Vietnam, and promote Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises to invest and transfer technology to Vietnam.

House of Representatives Speaker Hosoda Hiroyuki welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang and the high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese Government to visit Japan on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations.

Sharing his personal memories and feelings for the country and people of Vietnam, President Hosoda expressed his joy at the good development of the Vietnam-Japan relationship; especially the increasingly close ties between the two countries through investment, trade and human resources cooperation; highly appreciated the important role and positive contribution to the socio-economic development of Japan of the community of nearly 500,000 Vietnamese people in Japan and wished to further increase the number of Vietnamese people coming to Japan to study and work. President of the House of Representatives Hosoda affirmed that he would arrange to lead a delegation of National Assembly members to visit Vietnam.

Speaking with the three co-chairs of the Vietnam-Japan Economic Cooperation Committee of KEIDANREN, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang expressed his delight that Japan continues to be Vietnam's leading economic partner, with more and more Japanese enterprises investing and expanding their business in Vietnam.

The Deputy Prime Minister highly appreciated the contributions of KEIDANREN in promoting economic cooperation, investment, and connecting businesses of the two countries, especially through the Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative, which has provided many effective advices and suggestions to help improve Vietnam's business environment; affirmed that the Vietnamese Government always pays attention to protecting the legitimate interests of investors, harmonizing the interests of the State and businesses.

On this occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister suggested that KEIDANREN continue to further promote investment cooperation, support Vietnam to effectively participate in the supply chain of Japanese enterprises in the region, especially in areas such as renewable energy, climate change response, clean agriculture, digital transformation, green transformation, semiconductors, agricultural processing technology, etc.; support Vietnam to access capital sources to support infrastructure development, the Green Innovation Fund or green financial investment sources from Japan.

The three Co-Chairs of the KEIDANREN Vietnam-Japan Economic Cooperation Committee welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang to visit Japan in the year marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries; and thanked the Vietnamese Government for its attention and support for investment and business activities of foreign enterprises, including Japanese enterprises, in Vietnam over the past years.

Mr. Ichikawa Hideo, Senior Advisor of Resonac Group, shared that Vietnam has a stable political foundation, high economic growth, possesses a young, abundant, highly qualified human resource, a large consumer market, is an extremely attractive market for Japanese investors and has an important position in the global supply chain.

Mr. Ichikawa Hideo also said that there are currently about 2,000 Japanese enterprises investing in Vietnam and this number will continue to increase in the coming time; he hopes to continue receiving attention from the Vietnamese Government leaders so that the two sides can exploit more development potential together, on the basis of mutual benefit. Mr. Ichikawa expressed his desire to train high-quality human resources for Vietnam.

Mr. Hyodo Masayuki, General Director of Sumitomo Shoji Group, proposed that the Vietnamese Government create favorable conditions to promote investment of Japanese enterprises in potential fields such as energy conversion, green conversion, etc.; proposed that the Government support and assist KEIDANREN's initiative on establishing a dialogue mechanism between KEIDANREN and the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

Mr. Fujimoto, General Director of Sojitz Group, said that Japanese enterprises are interested in promoting investment in the field of high-tech agriculture to help improve the quality of Vietnamese agricultural products.
