Nam Dinh Pho is listed as a national intangible cultural heritage.

Accordingly, Nam Dinh Pho was included by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in the form of folk knowledge, meeting all the following criteria: Representative, expressing community and local identity; reflecting cultural diversity and human creativity, inherited through many generations; capable of recovery and long-term existence; agreed upon by the community, voluntarily nominated and committed to protection.

According to the Decision, the Chairman of the People's Committee at all levels where intangible cultural heritage is included in the List, within the scope of his/her duties and powers, shall perform state management in accordance with the provisions of law on cultural heritage.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has just announced the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List for Pho Nam Dinh.

Nam Dinh is the homeland of pho. Pho is a popular dish in Vietnamese culinary culture, loved by many people not only domestically but also in many countries around the world . Over time, pho has become the pride of Nam Dinh land and people; affirming the value of the culinary brand with unique features expressed in all stages: From preparation, selection of ingredients, food; method of making typical pho noodles; processing stage, completing a delicious bowl of pho to ensure flavor and nutritional quality.

Nam Dinh Pho becoming a national intangible cultural heritage is the initial basis for the Government to submit to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for consideration and inclusion of Nam Dinh Pho in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

From there, propose solutions to preserve and promote the value of the intangible cultural heritage of Pho Nam Dinh; continue to promote propaganda and promotion activities of Pho Nam Dinh culinary cultural heritage; strengthen State management of the heritage; at the same time, enhance the role and responsibility of authorities at all levels, culinary organizations, associations and the community in preserving and protecting the brand value and unique culinary products of Nam Dinh land and people.

Nam Dinh has a rich and diverse treasure of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. When talking about Nam Dinh's cultural heritage, we cannot help but mention the culinary specialties that bear the cultural characteristics of the land and its people such as: Kenh village rice rolls, Giao Thuy spring rolls, fragrant rice, Hai Hau longan cakes, Sa Chau fish sauce, Siu Chau peanut candy, Truc Ninh grilled fish in pots, Nghia Hung braised loach..., especially pho.

Pho Nam Dinh has a history of more than 100 years (around 1900), then developed in major cities in the North such as Hai Phong, Hanoi... Pho Nam Dinh is now present in all localities in the country and abroad, and is loved by many people.

Previously, to build a dossier to include Pho in the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, while preserving culinary culture associated with local tourism development, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Nam Dinh province organized a scientific seminar "Pho in the contemporary context from the perspective of cultural heritage".

At the seminar, cultural and culinary researchers clarified the origin, cultural elements, community connection through cuisine and issues related to preserving and developing the pho profession. These are important bases for compiling a dossier to include pho in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
