Quang Nam is famous as a tourist destination with 2 world heritages, of which the ancient town of Hoi An was recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage in 1999.
When mentioning Hoi An, tourists always remember the rows of ancient houses painted in the typical turmeric yellow color on the banks of the Hoai River, the ancient town scene shimmering with lanterns at night, or delicious dishes at affordable prices...
Most of the ancient houses in Hoi An are built in the traditional style with warm yellow walls.
The yellow wall in Hoi An is considered a highlight and a famous photo spot for domestic and foreign tourists when visiting, but graffiti has made the walls ugly.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, was surprised to see the old walls defaced in recent times. "I come to Hoi An every year and I was so surprised to see the walls of the old town being written and painted like that. I recommend that the local government should strictly punish graffiti in the old town," Mr. Tuan said indignantly.
Even the electrical box has advertising phone numbers pasted on it, making it unsightly.
The wall along Hai Ba Trung Street, a daily pass for many tourists, was not spared...
Many smudged drawings on the ancient yellow walls of old houses located in the core area of the World Cultural Heritage Hoi An
Ms. Nguyen Thi Bong (75 years old, a street vendor in Hoi An ancient town for many years) said: “The situation of graffiti on the streets in the ancient town has appeared for quite a long time. We, the locals, find this very frustrating, let alone the tourists who love the ancient town.”
Hoi An's characteristic mossy walls are no longer beautiful because of graffiti like this.
Speaking to Thanh Nien , Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoi An City, said that in the face of the situation of graffiti on the walls in the old town, the authorities are currently extracting camera footage to find violators. In the immediate future, areas that do not ensure the landscape will have the drawings whitewashed and inspections increased. "In the near future, the city police force will coordinate with local authorities to monitor, if any cases are discovered, they will be strictly handled to set an example. This graffiti is mainly done by foreign tourists because it is a trend of groups. Some groups paint everywhere, so it is difficult to propagate," said Mr. Son.
An Hoi Bridge across Hoai River is located near Cau Pagoda, where thousands of tourists pass by every day and take pictures, but the pillars of this bridge are also written and drawn everywhere...
