Vice President proposes UNDP continue to support Vietnam in economic development

On the occasion of attending the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York (USA), on March 11, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan met with Director General of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Achim Steiner.

At the meeting, the Vice President highly appreciated the leading role of UNDP in the United Nations development system, especially in promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, and thanked UNDP for always accompanying and supporting Vietnam in the process of national reconstruction, construction and development for nearly 50 years, through many development stages with total aid reaching nearly 1 billion USD.

The Vice President shared Vietnam's efforts to implement the Socio-Economic Development Strategy 2021-2030 and the Socio-Economic Development Plan 2021-2025, including GDP growth of 5.05% in 2023, stable macro-economy, response to climate change and natural disasters, transformation of the growth model, towards green, sustainable and inclusive development, as well as progress in the Human Development Index and gender equality.

The Vice President highly appreciated UNDP's cooperation in implementing the Vietnam-UNDP Cooperation Program for the 2022-2026 period, as well as in the draft Resource Mobilization Plan to implement the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

From there, the Vice President suggested that UNDP continue to actively support Vietnam in terms of finance, policy advice and capacity building to implement the above-mentioned priority policies, as well as support the economic and social development of the Mekong Delta, mobilize development partners to ensure appropriate resource support for those tasks, and support countries in the basin to effectively and sustainably manage and use Mekong River water resources.

The UNDP Director General congratulated Vietnam on its great achievements in recent times, saying that they are encouragement and practical contributions to the implementation of the United Nations' own priorities.

Mr. Steiner affirmed that Vietnam and UNDP share the same priorities on Green Transition, Digital Transformation, and are ready to support Vietnam in implementing its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and implementing the partnership for a just energy transition, accelerating the decarbonization process and ensuring access to clean energy at affordable prices, as well as acting as a bridge between Vietnam and international donors, as well as between Mekong River Basin countries to support Vietnam in achieving its goals.

The two sides agreed to continue close cooperation so that Vietnam can participate and contribute more actively to UNDP's global efforts to promote sustainable development.
