This morning, May 7, the National Information Office and Enquiry Point on Epidemiology and Animal and Plant Quarantine, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in coordination with the Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) of the European Union (EU) held an online conference with localities on disseminating regulations on importing agricultural and food products of animal and plant origin into the EU market.

At the conference, DG SANTE representatives introduced two main contents including regulations on importing synthetic products and some official control measures issued by the EU.
Specifically, the EU has recently introduced some specific requirements for imported composite products. With this new regulation, the regulation on the percentage of animals in processed products will no longer be effective. The new regulation is more stringent to better protect consumers, requiring Vietnamese export enterprises to grasp it firmly to avoid risks.
Also at the conference, DG SANTE representatives introduced in detail and answered questions about regulations related to hygiene and food safety for synthetic products and products of non-animal origin; rules of origin as well as plans to monitor residues on synthetic products and products of non-animal origin. Accompanying these are quarantine measures based on international practices issued by the WTO.
Regarding control measures, the representative of DG SANTE emphasized that all food suppliers and importers into the EU market are responsible for ensuring compliance with risk reduction and prevention measures at appropriate frequency.
Currently, the EU divides imported products into two categories: low risk and high risk. Of these, low risk products, through your assessment, will not require systematic control at the border.
On the contrary, high-risk products (mainly of animal origin) will require more quarantine and veterinary supervision measures. Corresponding to each type of risk, the EU will provide a different supervision method, such as requiring a food safety certificate issued by the competent authority of the exporting country, the frequency of inspections at the border gate, etc.
DG SANTE is known to be the agency that implements EU policies on health and food safety. Its recommendations and proposals have a major impact on all 27 member states.
In 2023, Vietnam's agricultural, forestry and fishery exports to the European market will reach about 5.3 billion USD. This is Vietnam's third largest market, after the United States and China. Therefore, understanding EU import regulations is extremely important.
