Vietnamese animation integrates with the world: Letting Vietnamese animation reach out to the big ocean
Báo Thanh niên•19/11/2024
With new advances in the animation industry and the state's policy of developing the cultural industry, bringing Vietnamese animation to the world has a "broad path".
FOLKLORE MATERIALS ARE ADVANTAGES
According to animation screenwriter Pham Dinh Hai, the infinite appeal of animation is its ability to create worlds that audiences rarely have the opportunity to experience in reality. And Vietnamese folk culture is an extremely rich source of material for each creator at different stages. "Depending on the requirements of each project, we choose different aspects of folk culture as material, no aspect is clearly superior to any other. All are treasures," said Mr. Hai.

Regarding the above issue, Principal Vu Thuong of Sama Animation Academy said that Vietnamese animation has many advantages to reach out to the world, especially in the context of the global entertainment industry developing and the cultural and creative industry in Vietnam is currently being strongly promoted. "Vietnam has a long history, with more than 2,000 traditional craft villages demonstrating the talent, meticulousness, perseverance and cultural creativity of young people. The young and enthusiastic staff in Vietnam today have a deep understanding of international trends, and are also very creative and passionate about bringing Vietnamese culture and stories with strong national identity to the world. When creativity is combined with passion and professionalism, we can completely build Vietnamese animation products with global influence", Principal Vu Thuong commented.
With more than 20 years of experience in animation, director Trinh Lam Tung also affirmed that the Vietnamese folklore treasure is an extremely valuable and massive material. However, this cultural treasure has many different versions and has not been fully systematized, so when wanting to exploit it, animators need to conduct serious and extensive research, distilling the quintessence of the cultural characteristics and suitability to be able to bring it to the screen.
"One of the outstanding strengths of Vietnamese animation is its cultural value. With a long history and rich culture, Vietnamese folk tales, legends and customs provide a rich and unique source of creative inspiration, creating products with their own identity. These stories, characters and images can help Vietnamese animation become new in the eyes of international audiences, satisfying the curiosity and need to explore diverse cultures of global viewers," Mr. Ta Manh Hoang, General Director of Sconnect Group, emphasized.
TO REACH OUT TO THE WORLD
VN has a series of short animated films called Wolfoo, which after 7 years of being released and posted on online platforms has attracted millions of children and audiences worldwide with more than 4,000 episodes translated into dozens of different languages. This can be considered the series that laid the foundation for the journey of Vietnamese animated films to reach out to the world.
According to animators, Vietnam possesses a young and creative workforce, an invaluable resource for major projects in the industry. This is a great potential for Vietnamese animation to create breakthrough products with their own identity, conquering domestic and international audiences, gradually affirming the position of Vietnamese animation on the world map. Another advantage is the strong development of online platforms such as YouTube , Netflix, and domestic streaming services, which have opened up opportunities to reach a wider audience. Thanks to that, Vietnamese animation not only reaches domestic audiences but also easily reaches international audiences.
As someone who regularly connects Vietnamese animation with international partners, Principal Vu Thuong said that international units view Vietnamese animation with interest and quite positive evaluation. "In a meeting between SAMA and Gobelins - one of the famous animation training facilities in the world, director John Coven (Director of the Animation Department, Gobelins School Paris, France) shared with me that the skills, creativity, flexibility, foreign language ability, and connectivity of the young Vietnamese creative team are very good. Not only that, international units are also very impressed with the reasonable production costs in Vietnam. Compared to many countries with developed animation industries, Vietnam can provide products at more competitive costs while still ensuring high quality. This is a particularly important advantage, helping Vietnamese animation attract more international cooperation opportunities," said Principal Vu Thuong.
However, according to director Dang Hai Quang, who has experience working as an outsourcing agent for foreign animation studios, many Vietnamese animation studios choose to produce children's animation on the YouTube platform, thereby earning revenue from advertising. And this is actually a form of MMO (make money online) based on the quantity of products rather than making money from the quality of product content, and this market is not the market of famous animation studios abroad. "Speaking of reaching out to the world, many Vietnamese animation studios are doing this. But competing with famous animation studios abroad means competing with them in a common market such as the cinema market for example. First of all, we have to compete with animation in the Vietnamese cinema market and then compete with them in the foreign market. This is a path that can be taken quickly, but cannot be taken as a shortcut. In our opinion, Vietnamese animation still has a lot of work to do," said director Dang Hai Quang.
