Director Bao Nguyen's song project "We Are the World" was nominated for an Emmy, including Outstanding Documentary.

The nominations were announced on July 17 (local time). In addition to the Best Documentary category, Bao Nguyen's The Greatest Night in Pop was nominated for Best Director for a Documentary and Best Sound Editing for a Nonfiction Film. The director said: "Our team was overwhelmed when my name was announced in the same category as other prestigious directors."

The film premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival - the largest film festival in the US. With never-before-seen footage, the film goes from the idea generation stage, the process of composing the song We Are the World by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson, to the release of the song in March 1985. The highlight is the moment when dozens of big names in the music industry gathered in a studio in Los Angeles (USA), recording the song to help with famine relief in Africa.

The film received critical acclaim, with a 98% "fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes . " Music documentaries may be out of fashion, but The Greatest Night in Pop makes a mark by exploring a historic period in the music industry," wrote RogerEbert 's Brian Tallerico. "It's a delight to hear Dionne Warwick's sweet voice blend with Willie Nelson again," commented the Chicago Sun-Times .

According to the Independent , the single sold 20 million copies, won four Grammys and an American Music Award. Profits from promotional programs, poster and T-shirt sales helped raise more than $63 million for humanitarian aid programs in Africa and the US.

Bao Nguyen said the idea for the film came during Covid-19, when people around the world suffered a lot of loss. The situation made the filmmaker think of We Are the World , a song that many audiences searched for when the world faced many crises of natural disasters, epidemics, and racism. "The song was so influential that nearly 40 years later, people around the world are still singing it," said the director.

Bao Nguyen holds a BA in International Relations from New York University (USA) and a MA in Documentary Film from The School of Visual Arts (New York, USA). At the Tribeca Film Festival (USA), the documentary Once in a Lullaby - produced by Bao Nguyen - premiered in 2012, Live from New York! - directed by him - was selected to open the event three years later. Before The Greatest Night in Pop, the project about Bruce Lee - Be Water (2020) - was nominated for the Research Achievement: Documentary category at the 2021 Emmy.

In addition to the documentary category, the organizers announced other important nominations. Among them, the Shogun series leads with 25 nominations. The content is inspired by the novel of the same name by writer James Clavell, set before the battle of Sekigahara in 1600.

At that time, the supreme ruler passed away, and the heir was too young. Before he died, he assigned five lords, including Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), to form a regency council to rule the country until the heir came of age. On the surface, they served the will and assisted the successor, but in reality, they waited for the opportunity to become Shogun (General) to hold supreme power.

Experts say the series conveys the spirit of bushido, showing the complexity of feudal Japanese society. In the 2024 film, the roles of the Japanese characters are portrayed in depth, showing the main character's intelligence, instead of leaning towards a Western perspective like in the 1980 TV version.

Shogun is followed by The Bear with 23 nominations, Only Murders in the Building (21 nominations) and True Detective: Night Country (19 nominations). Other notable works include 17 nominations for Fallout, 11 nominations for Baby Reindeer and six nominations for The Gilded Age .

Emmy is the most prestigious award in the US television industry, belonging to the "big four" in the performance industry awards group: Oscar (film), Grammy (music), Tony (drama). The event was first held in January 1949, taking place annually, except for 2021 when it was not held due to the pandemic. Emmy postponed the 2023 season, moving it to early this year due to the impact of the Hollywood artists' strike. The 76th award ceremony will take place in September, live on ABC . The organizers have not yet announced the host.
