Successful surgery for patient with giant tumor weighing 3.5kg - Lang Son Newspaper and Radio and Television

- Lang Son Provincial General Hospital (LGH) has just successfully operated on a “giant” neurofibroma weighing 3.5 kg in the patient’s lower back. This is the largest neurofibroma ever operated on at the hospital.

Previously, on March 20, 2025, Lang Son General Hospital admitted a patient named TSH (31 years old, Ai Quoc commune, Loc Binh district) to the hospital due to a giant tumor in the lumbar region. This tumor had appeared for many years but recently grew rapidly, greatly affecting daily life, so the patient came to the hospital for treatment. After examination and testing, the doctor diagnosed the patient with a large lumbar neurofibroma measuring 30x30cm.

Doctors assessed that, with the condition of patient H., it is necessary to perform early tumor removal surgery to reduce pressure on the lumbar region and at the same time avoid the tumor from growing too large and rupturing, affecting the patient's life. However, the doctor also assessed that this is a complicated and challenging surgery because the tumor is too large, has many blood vessels, increases the risk of bleeding during surgery as well as post-operative complications that can be dangerous for the patient. The doctor ordered the patient to be transferred to a higher level for surgery, but because there are not enough conditions for transfer, the patient wants to be treated at the General Hospital. Due to difficult circumstances, the patient does not have the money for treatment and living expenses, the Hospital has called on the community, benefactors, including many medical staff at the Hospital to join hands to help patient H. with more than 48 million VND to help the patient have the opportunity for treatment.

The surgery lasted more than 4 hours, the doctors carefully handled each step to ensure complete removal of the tumor and preserve the function of the surrounding organs. Thanks to the close coordination between the specialists in the Department of Neurosurgery - Thoracic and the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation, along with the support of modern equipment, the surgery was successful. The doctors freed the patient from the tumor weighing more than 3.5 kg. After surgery, the patient recovered well and is continuing treatment at the Hospital.
